I have had enough and need to do something. Why is no one getting them out?

IIRC the ransom is a million quid. Now if I had the millions that various celebrities have I would have paid the ransom and got them out. Bollocks to not giving in.

What on earth are you talking about?

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 31/01/2010 17:36

Sorry, I forgot to put their names!

It is the Chandlers. A couple from Tunbridge wells who have been kidnapped by pirates.

SilveryMoon · 31/01/2010 17:38

Fab I agree. There are plenty of people out there who have this kind of money and could help

LauraIngallsWilder · 31/01/2010 17:41

Do you mean the couple who were sailing their yacht?

If so Im not terribly sympathetic to their cause.........

If I had a yacht (and obviously I havent!) I wouldnt sail it in waters where pirates lurk!!!!!
Im sympathetic to how scared they must be and feel for them and their family but not to the extent that I support the idea of paying the ransom

Aubergines · 31/01/2010 17:42

But if the ransom is paid then it will encourage more kidnappings. One short sighted "kind" gesture will end up doing much more harm than good.

bronze · 31/01/2010 17:43

I think its the we will not negotiate with terrorist mindset

which I know I wouldn't be thinking it if I was them or their friends or family I have to say I agree with

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 31/01/2010 17:44

I don't buy that.

Whatever they have done they are human beings and they deserve to be helped.

If I had the money I would pay it.

OP posts:
bruxeur · 31/01/2010 17:44

Paying the ransom just means that every other yacht with Westerners on it turns into a floating cashpoint for those with more AK47s than morals.

See also - negotiating with terrorists.

bruxeur · 31/01/2010 17:45

Hmm. Bit late on that one.

Fab - what part of the logic do you disagree with?

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 31/01/2010 17:50

I think we shouldn't be worrying about the potential future kidnappings. We should be concerned with the here and now and a couple who have been separated and must be terrified - along with their families.

OP posts:
bruxeur · 31/01/2010 17:52

So it's not so much that you disagree with the idea, just that you don't care that your plan would result in more deaths and more kidnappings?

Flightattendant · 31/01/2010 17:53

surely there must be a way to pretend to give them the money then somehow just catch the people instead?

That's what happens in all the movies.

cookielove · 31/01/2010 17:56

I do believe the couple were well aware of the risk they were taking when they purposely sailed into those waters, and i also agree you don't negotiate with terrorist, as sad as it is, if you pay now, other people will pay later

Caoimhe · 31/01/2010 17:57

Sadly, Fab, people shouldn't just be concerned with the here and now - they should think about the long term implications of their actions. Paying the ransom would cause more problems than it solves.

Flightattendant · 31/01/2010 18:12

My good friend is a professional Sea Captain, delivering yachts all over the world. He won't sail those areas.

Not that I don't feel for the people but it is fairly well known to be a dangerous place.

I am so sorry for them and their family.

BitOfFun · 31/01/2010 18:16

I feel terrible for them too, but paying the ransom makes the world more dangerous, not less. Unfortunately, having a yacht does not make the world your playground, and if you ignore basic safety advice, awful things like this can happen.

FabIsGoingToBeFabIn2010 · 31/01/2010 18:22

Of course I care that there might be future deaths and kidnappings.

I just feel so sorry for them.

I don't expect anyone to agree with me. Nor does it make me wrong. I just feel what I feel.

OP posts:
bronze · 01/02/2010 09:36

I feel sorry for them too
but that doesn't stop the logical part of me understanding that we just can't pay the ransom

morningpaper · 01/02/2010 09:38

If we pay the ransom, then next week, another five couples will be kidnapped - will you just keep paying ransoms?

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 01/02/2010 09:39

haven't governments paid in the past for merchant ships?

EleanoraBuntingCupcake · 01/02/2010 09:39

really mp, are their 5 couples floating about in readiness?

GypsyMoth · 01/02/2010 09:42

pay them once and they will move on to bigger things.....the ransom money, once paid, what do you think they will use it for???

morningpaper · 01/02/2010 09:43

Well they can just sort of MOVE their boats apparently

pagwatch · 01/02/2010 09:51

OK genuinely perplexed here.
Randsoms do get paid don't they? Celebs and large corporations in tricky areas have Kidnap and Randsom insurances and people get paid off - it just usually gets done outside of publicity whirlwinds.

I always assumed tht randsom only becomes a big political issue once they were made public

( if not wonders what the K&R claims dept were up to for all those years )

GypsyMoth · 01/02/2010 09:59

if you have ransom and kidnap insurance would it not be invalidated if you deliberately sailed into dangerous, pirate ridden waters after previously being warned??
