I find it ironic that now the west is being increasingly affected action must be taken. I wonder how, when us in the west are being told to get on our bikes and go back to a simpler way of life those in India and China will just be embracing the wonders of Fordism. Convince the americans to stop using cars, or west industries to stop bringing their products to the east (products that many times are brough at the expense of destroying the culture of the place). And then we all be "fine"

I'm afraid I do a head in the sand ostrich impression over cataclysmic predictions like this.

I'm not saying that I don't believe them or that they don't have credibility - just that I prefer not to think about it too much....

Because as individuals what can we really do that is any way meaningful or useful to curb environmental pollution? (other than the trivial - not leaving appliances on standby, recycling etc...all of which I do but it does seem rather pointless)

You're right about it being our export Chandra. But I don't think it'd help much if the americans did all stop using their cars. It's a global problem not, sadly, an exclusively US one.

Actually, I know it's another thread but watching BB this morning seemed to present incontrovertible proof that we?re in the midst of an extinction event.

YEs everybody has cars not only the americans but a diference of most European cities in America you really need a car as sometimes there are not even pavement or public transport near home. Though I think they could do with more economic vahicles as well.

Packaging is the big no no IMO. Is not that there's a kind of packaging for every product, is that many products have a different pack according to the store in which they are going to be sold, and unfortunately most economic stores demand the cheapest and most ecologically unsafe packaging. However, I believe that we all have very "anti ecological" lives, and no amount of washable nappies would undo that

I have already assumed that little by little we will make our life more difficult but I assume we will adapt to the changes though, as with everything related to extinction only the fittest will survive (those who had the economical means to adapt rather than those who can have the fittest bodies . IMO is already happening, actually the big drafts in Africa in the last decades are supossed to be effects of global dimming.

Washable nappies - great example. Why after we've just had a baby is it suddenly our sole responsibility to save the f'ing planet aswell?!

Like we don't already have enough on our plate!

Yes, we should let our offspringfertilise the soil with organic waste rather than polluting it with nappies and chemically produced composts
