Guardian article here actually fails to mention that the first verse is not just controversial, it is illegal to sing it in Germany.

Have to admit i did German for 5 years at school and this was never ever mentioned ,but now i know i will refrain from singing it

The first and second verses haven't actually been illegal or "verboten" since 1952, but only the third verse is allowed at official occasions and the other two are usually carefully avoided.

PD's tiny drug-fried brain probably couldn't figure that out.
