news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/africa/8366197.stm

"A 20-year-old woman divorcee accused of committing adultery in Somalia has been stoned to death by Islamists in front of a crowd of about 200 people.

A judge working for the militant group al-Shabab said she had had an affair with an unmarried 29-year-old man.

He said she gave birth to a still-born baby and was found guilty of adultery. Her boyfriend was given 100 lashes

According to reports from a small village near the town of Wajid, 250 miles (400km) north-west of the capital, Mogadishu, the woman was taken to the public grounds where she was buried up to her waist.

She was then stoned to death in front of the crowds on Tuesday afternoon."

Thanks for that, do you have anything to say, or just want to shock people

lou031205 · 18/11/2009 15:18

Perhaps we should just do links, so people have a choice whether to read the gory details.

SomeGuy · 18/11/2009 15:24

Lou it should be quite obvious from the subject (which is number 1 headline on BBC news) what this thread would be about.

I don't think this thread is anyway ambiguous or potentially about fluffy bunnies or something.

but people can comment on the link title, they don't need to read the gory horrid details to know it was terrible.

MrsMerryHenry · 18/11/2009 16:09

FGS, grow up! Nobody was forced to read below the first paragraph. We all have the choice, and so far all of us have chosen to read it.

I am amazed that you two are more concerned about your discomfort at 'having' to read something gory (you call that gory? Pah!), rather than posting about how awful this story is. How shameful.

This story is horrific, I cannot understand why some people think this is acceptable. Lashing the man was bad enough, but my god killing the woman? I'm almost speechless.

I also wonder what kind of 'evidence' they had of the 'crime' .

SomeGuy · 18/11/2009 16:12

I think the evidence was the stillborn child. Since she was divorced it was classed as adultery as if she were still married. As he was never married, he only got the lashes.

That's what I don't get, SG - I whizzed through the article so didn't get that he was single as well as her. I do appreciate that each country has its own laws/ views on life, but if she was allowed to divorce, why class her as still married, just so that you can stone her to death?

SomeGuy · 18/11/2009 16:18

MrsMH, I suspect that perhaps she was divorced under such national law as there is, which the local militia don't care for - the probably say they don't recognise such a thing as divorce. Or perhaps divorced by a different faction.

OP posts:
MrsMerryHenry · 18/11/2009 16:20

Oh, it was a local militia that did it? I wonder whether there was more to the story that met the eye.

Awful. Simply awful.

Chickenshavenolips · 18/11/2009 16:24

Horrendous. It's easy to think that things like this don't happen now, and that they haven't for centuries.

Kathyis12feethighandbites · 18/11/2009 16:32

Horrible. Absolute f*cking bastards.
I wonder if there were a lot of people there watching who did not want it to happen but didn't dare to intervene.

MrsMerryHenry I just didn't see why the op had to yet again copy and paste, but not offer any opinion or anything. I can post if I want you know

Yes, well, I've never heard of a man being put to death for adultery. Not that I think anyone should be, of course, but it does rather add insult to injury that it is always the woman

SomeGuy · 18/11/2009 20:02

Actually it says in the article that they stoned a man earlier this month, but they are waiting till his girlfriend gives birth before killing her.

Sad
MrsMerryHenry · 23/11/2009 12:16

2shoes - you've totally missed my point. And still haven't posted anything about the actual news story. I find it incredibly sad that you're more concerned with your sensitivity towards certain words on a page than the fact that a woman's been stoned to death.
