Let's put the fun back into feminism: Forget burning bras and Germaine Greer, what we need now is Cheryl Cole

Here (warning, it's the DM) According to this, to make feminism more appealing to the younger generation feminists need to:

"get rid of the po-faced, serious image. Let's swap it for something lighthearted and welcoming.", "Sort out your websites. Celebrate successful women who have a sense of humour. Go for some celebrity endorsement." and "Get a marketing manager".

It ends with "Cheryl might be the best hope for feminism that we have."

W the flippin F? I mean, really, WTF?

No Lenin, it's rubbish. Those paper bags they put on the magazines, they should have been pink.

Oh Dittany, that's a great quote, I may have to reconsider the Cole.

Well exactly dittany.

It's the comment about getting rid of the 'po-faced serious image' and swapping it for something 'light-hearted and welcoming' that really gets me. Why? Lots of issues feminists challenge are bloody serious (domestic violence, rape convictions, porn etc etc) so what's wrong with taking a serious attitude to them?

I prefer Caitlin Moran's take on rebranding feminism personally

bleh · 12/08/2009 13:25

There is something I agree with in their: originally feminism had defined goals; equality in the workplace, the vote, equal pay for equal work, and we have gotten very far with these goals. NOw, the movement has lost it's stridency and focus somewhat, and there does seem to be the sense that it is a bit "moany" - you have all these things and you want more? I personally feel that the feminist movement should redirect its energies towards helping women in developing countries who don't have the choice over what happens with their body, their life and/or their children. What about more support for the victims of rape, particularly in places like Sudan or Congo. What about providing more support to grass-roots businesses in developing countries? There are lots (particularly in India and SA) that are run by women, for women, as it is more likely that they will use the money to develop the community, feed and clothe their children, than the men.
