I found this interesting, but was disappointed that the writer didn't acknowledge that there are many other methods of bringing up children besides the two extremes he mentions. I think that she at least have alluded to the many shades of grey in between the black and white.

I think most of us follow a middle ground between the two. I know I just make it up as I go along.

Me too, belgo. I know a lot of people who use various parenting books, but they generally pick and choose the bits that suit them and don't follow it all to the letter.

It's a personal anecdote, though, not talking about what other people do. How he was brought up, how he reacted against that in his own parenting, and how his son feels about that today. I think the "a middle way is probably best" conclusion is one that most readers would draw without his having to explicitly state it.
