Media watch - will we even hear about events in Iran now Jacko is dead?

Just wondering. It's a good way of seeing if the media is as unbiased and utilitarian as it claims - or if it just follows sensation to get the punters

It will be like a re-run of the 'Princess Di Queen of Hearts' bollocks again. MJ will be feted as an innovative and amazing King of Pop and all of his weirdness will be brushed under the table. Anyone who dares criticise him from now on will be 'in denial' or a bitch.

So goodbye news for a while.

whomovedmychocolate · 26/06/2009 08:48

Well you can't libel the dead so shall we get started?

Never liked the man, constantly grabbing his crotch like he has a social disease!

alicecrail · 26/06/2009 08:50

What?!!!! MJ is dead? I'm going to have to look that up, i had no idea

Lulumama · 26/06/2009 08:52

who on earth believes the media is unbiased and utilitarian??

unfrotunately, most people will want to hear about Michael Jackson than Iran.

twas ever thus

i have been extremely critical of him in the past, but he has literally just died, i dont think that picking him apart today is the right thing. surely he should be afforded a bit of respect?

anyway, it takes peoples' minds off the recession, which apparently is over and swine flu.

EldonAve · 26/06/2009 08:53

he didn't look in the best of health tbh

MmeLindt · 26/06/2009 08:53

OMG, just looked at Sky News. They have a picture of a worker in Manila showing off a newly printed t-shirt, "Michael Jackson, Thank you for the music"

How tacky is that?

KingRolo · 26/06/2009 08:57

He's less then 24 hours dead.

He might have been a complete loon but a little respect, if just for today, is due. He was a human being. An odd one yes, but still a human being.

And I don't think the media has ever claimed to be "unbiased and utilitarian" has it?

EugeneHCrabs · 26/06/2009 08:59

WILL THE MUMSNET

EugeneHCrabs · 26/06/2009 08:59

Im wiht callisto
he was at the best misguided, at the worst probably a paedophile

bambipie · 26/06/2009 09:02

I was just going to start this thread!
No disrepct to MJ but - Iran, Pakistan, Afganistan, global financial crisis, swine flu, MPs scandal....

Fair enough to headline on R1, but Today on R4 was dominated by it. Sometimes I feel as though I must think completely different things to the whole rest of the country and find it very irritating when people say things like 'the whole world is in shock'. Really. do you think so? Even people living in refugee camps / being blown up by car bombs / dying of AIDs etc. FFS

EugeneHCrabs · 26/06/2009 09:03

dh lay in bed saying "whocares, who CARES, WHo cares"
with diffo emphasis

southeastastra · 26/06/2009 09:06

dunno bbc were talking about metal detectors when gmtv were on about jackson

Lulumama · 26/06/2009 09:14

like it or not, it is news and newsworthy

yes, there is an awful lot of other real tragedy occurring, but the death of pop icon ,who was one of the most famous men in the world, is news.

to 1000s of people, this is news

it might not be highbrow , but people want to know

slebs are more a part of our culture than ever before

EugeneHCrabs · 26/06/2009 09:14

dotn make it right

Lulumama · 26/06/2009 09:20

doesn't make what right?

should only highbrow news or real tragedy ever make the news?

bambipie · 26/06/2009 09:25

Of course it's news, just not as important as loads of other stuff. Certainly not important enough to dominate the only 'highbrow' news prog on the radio in the morning!

KingRolo · 26/06/2009 09:27

Well, they never even mentioned in on Look North.

snigger · 26/06/2009 09:28

DH called last night to tell me he'd caught a fish. Then he told me he had a weird pain in his foot. Then asked me to update his liability insurance in the morning. Then he told me he'd had a text about MJ.

Correct order of priority, IMO.

You're going to hear One Day In Your Life so many times you'll spontaneously combust, mark my words.

EugeneHCrabs · 26/06/2009 09:29

Sally Taylor gave it a miss too

KingRolo · 26/06/2009 09:34

My DH told me first thing this morning, before news of DD's stinky nappy. He said 'The King of Pop is dead'. Mind you, he was a bit of a fan in his younger days.

Why would it have any bearing on whether the media is biased?

KingRolo · 26/06/2009 10:12

Did you hear about Michael Jackson's dog's penis?

whomovedmychocolate · 26/06/2009 13:08

EugeneHCrabs - I think you may have misheard your hubby - but he's wrong. I really don't care

monkeytrousers · 26/06/2009 16:59
