I once worked in a Research Institute in Saudi Arabia. One morning I went in to find the whole place full of Iraian security thugs bearing batons and looking very intimidating. The reason? A visit from Iran's Supreme Being or whatever he is called, Rafsanjani. He is supposed to be the real leader of Iran.

Scared the poo out of me the visit did.

I've spent most of the last two days following it on Twitter. It's really exciting , but really awful at the same time.

Yes- dd's dad is in Iran right now and can't get out of the country and I am shitting my pants for him.
But I am sooooo happy that they are doing this. They have been oppressed for too long.Power to the people!
However, I am shitting myself again as according to today's headlines the Aiyatolla has said that the election wasn't rigged (BOLLOCKS) and that he's supporting the president and that if people demonstrate then there will be a violent crackdown. So I'm totally fucked off tbh.

That president whateverhisname is is a maniac. He is a religious fundamentalist so you can forget about rights for women, rights for anyone really.
Countries such as Iran stage elections for show. There was no way that the dictator will let another man in. It happened in Zimbabwe when Robert Mugabe won over Morgan Tsangeri.
It makes me furious and very glad that we live in the West. Despite the failings of our political leaders, we only have a bumbling idiot to deal with as opposed to a unhinged despot.
