"He has a mandate...."

He doesn't!

"The labour party elected him!"

Yes, the people didn't.

You elect a parliamentary party to run the country, not the leader so in that respect, Brown does have a mandate so Harriet Harman, on that issue, is not an idiot.

Edam - I have to confess that I did not employ 'thought processes' I just picked one of her (many) insulting nicknames at random.

The Labour party has produced nearly all of the great women politicians this country has seen; Barbara Castle, Betty Boothroyd, Mo Mowlem, Gwyneth Dunwoody. Compared with these women HH is a pathetic, gabbing, useless waste of space.

I agree with edam - she has done some great stuff on equality and (with Jacqui Smith) on domestic violence. It's great to have a proper grown-up feminist in the cabinet.

OTOH she regularly defends the indefensible (cabinet responsibility and laudable loyalty I know, but still has to say black is white several times a week and it's difficult to listen to).

One thing I really don't understand about her is that she seems to have pulled a great big schemozzle WRT MPs' expenses. She was on the Commons Commission, which fiercely opposed all moves towards transparency over a number of years - and yet she's now doing a big 'more in sorrow than anger' act, implying that she's been working for transarency behind the scenes for years. Maybe she really was in a minority of one on the Commission - it's possible I suppose.
