I very much doubt the chain of events would have been this if she had won!

"There are boys at my sons school who are reaching adulthood and have enough understanding to want to participate but not sufficient to understand thattheir role would be to be laughed at."

pagwatch - spot on

GooseyLoosey · 01/06/2009 14:10

All the presenters on this kind of terrible programme should have the following printed on cards in front of them to remind them what they are actually doing to people:

...I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet,
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams

WB Yeats

I agree, gooseyloosey. But I would want the same card sent to everyone who watch it as well.

stillenacht · 01/06/2009 14:21

absolutely gooseyloosey

We are still being peddled this nonsense that fame equals the ultimate happiness/fulfilment.It is cruel and nothing good ever seems to come of it.Whatever happened to the public selecting their musicians/comedians etc from strightforward touring and hard work and the best making it through because they have had a following not because simon cowell presents us with a couple of 'choices'and we pick one! But as I said before every time I think the death knell has been souinded on this clap trap some other rubbish appears. If this woman has been admitted to th priory for health reasons WHY DO WE NEED TO BE TOLD??????Is there no privacy or discretion left

KingRolo · 01/06/2009 14:57

I suppose what seems to be happening to Susan Boyle might be a timely reminder to everyone that fame definitely does not equal happiness.

TwoIfBySea · 01/06/2009 18:56

Without saying how I know this (which is practically permission for a flaming on mn) it is a fact that Susan Boyle did have mental health issues. I won't go in any more detail other than to say that those closest to her should be ashamed of themselves for leaving her to face this herself.

While they seem quite happy to be on tv today they haven't been there to support her now or, quite evidently from what I know, in the past.

So while she is being judged it should be remembered that she does have mental health problems and I do hope she can get some peace at this Priory place. She deserves it, I feel so sorry for her.

As for the media, I am not surprised they would exploit and push the buttons of someone who was vunerable - not surprised at all.

seeker · 01/06/2009 19:19

I am not judging Susan Boyle. I am judging everyone involved in the commissioning and production of the programme, and I am judging the ghoulish ambulance chasers who watch it.

margotfonteyn · 01/06/2009 23:15

The whole thing is ghastly. Anyone can see she wouldn't be able to cope with the publicity. Apparently she had been on 'talent' shows before, what did they think would happen? Her brother, who has been on the news today, seems fairly reasonable. Why on earth didn't he stop her?Let's hope (or not) she doesn't stalk Piers Morgan....

Molesworth · 01/06/2009 23:34

Why should anyone have stopped a grown woman from entering a talent contest? No-one could have predicted the unprecedented global reaction to Susan Boyle's audition performance, and - 'learning difficulties' notwithstanding - the impact of such instant global celebrity would be extraordinarily difficult for anyone to cope with (as rubyslippers said back at the beginning of this thread).

Nancy66 · 02/06/2009 09:59

Seeker - ambulance chasers? ! Bit OTT isn't it? They're just families watching telly on a Saturday night.

noddyholder · 02/06/2009 12:57

Ambulance chasers that is inspired and sooooo accurate for this sort of tv

Nancy66 · 02/06/2009 13:42

even though it doesn't actually make sense?

noddyholder · 02/06/2009 13:58

It makes sense to me!It is like saying car crash tv no car crash in sight but its perfect description.

Nancy66 · 02/06/2009 14:29

ambulance chasers are the law firms that represent victims of accidents

people who watch accident are voyeurs or rubber neckers.

seeker · 03/06/2009 05:31

"They're just families watching telly on a Saturday night." Families watching telly on a Saturday night in order to laugh at poor deluded people who've been conned into thinking that they've got talent they plainly haven't?
