why the HECK did a 10 year old want to go on a tanning machine??? hardly anyone seems surprised about this

PM73 · 02/05/2009 08:21

I think its very sad that a 10yr old desires a tanned body in the first place.

Her Mum looks slightly orange tanned so maybe she wanted to be like her Mum.

These tanning places should be manned imo,at the end of the day she is a child.

"She has nobody to blame but herself".

Erm... She's 10 years old. She has parents (well, a mother at least). Whose job it is to look after her and keep her from harm. It's not the girl's fault, but her mother's.

Ghastly, ghastly story.

pointydog · 02/05/2009 12:21

It is sad that a 10 year old wants a tanned body but little girls (and boys) see tanned bodies all around them, they talk about getting a suntan, it is equated with beauty, small towns are full of charity shops, opticians and tanning/beauty shops these days. Grim but true.

So it is society's responsibility to legislate against walk-in, no-questions-asked tanning salons

brettgirl2 · 02/05/2009 14:01

I have never understood this tanning obsession. IMO it looks utterly ridiculous when people are wandering around in a rainy UK January tangoed from head to toe.

Aren't sunbeds just bad for you full stop however 'responsibly' they are used? I also think in general they appeal most to impressionable teenage girls (including those 16+, which let's be fair is still not very old!)

I would love to blame the parents here but can't quite believe it is possible to access this so easily.

lunamoon2 · 02/05/2009 22:21

I too cannot believe that it is legal to have unmanned cancer tanning salons, highly irresponsible.
I don't blame the child at all and I for one have never discussed sunbeds with my dd who is 12. Perhaps I should.
I also dislike the tangoed look and as I'm no good at fake tanning, can't wait for the pale and interseting look to become fashionable.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/south_west/8028898.stm why are all these stories from Wales ? Is it an irresistable fashion to be tanned in the winter ?

Its always amazed me that anyone can even get insurance for running a tanning salon. These machines can cause cancer. I think that this is a timebomb just waiting to go off. Will people be able to claim from these places if/when they develop cancer in later life as a result of using these salons?

Yes a 10 year old can understand what "no under 16's" mean, but I doubt she knew why or thought there was any danger.
These things should not be unattended - they should be kept locked and key only give out after an age check.
