This sounds worse than the bird flu that thankfully never really happened.

Sky news have a press conference on now about possible cases in new york. When do we start panic buying .

and SARS, that never really happened, and West Nile virus..

I'm quaking in my boots

HecatesTwopenceworth · 25/04/2009 21:22

Well, we're about due for a pandemic that wipes a few million out.

Meglet · 25/04/2009 21:30

It seems to be moving frighteningly fast.

boredwithmyoldname · 25/04/2009 21:36

Meglet you do seem worried.. I don't think you need to start panicking.

MsMargotBeauregarde · 25/04/2009 21:44

I just saw this on the Spanish news, outbreak in Mexico. Blimey. Looks bad. There's no vaccine either.

Sidge · 25/04/2009 21:45

I mentioned this to DH after I had heard about it on the radio news.

HIs answer - "don't answer the door to anyone wearing a sombrero".

Flightattendant25 · 25/04/2009 21:46

I am scared too but I get scared about everything. It looks like not that many people have died.

boredwithmyoldname · 25/04/2009 21:47

lol Sidge

AmazingMabel · 25/04/2009 21:47

New York now chaps.

AmazingMabel · 25/04/2009 21:48

And my contact in America is saying it's in Kansas too. (Though I never trust an American )

Meglet · 25/04/2009 21:49

boredwithmyoldname I worry about everything .

boredwithmyoldname · 25/04/2009 21:53

Flightattendant25 · 25/04/2009 21:55

really? Do you know about these things Bwmon?

(thought I saw you on other thread but can't function well enough to have a search..)

boredwithmyoldname · 25/04/2009 21:58

hi flight
yes i posted about this happening a month after sanofi pasteur announced they were building a big plant in Mexico to manufacture flu vaccine and prepare for a pandemic

very serendipitous

i lived through sars and face masks and schools closing and was impressed by the level of panic -- perhaps I am a bit too cynical about these things

llareggub · 25/04/2009 21:59

Better activate that zombie plan then.

Meglet · 25/04/2009 22:00

flightattendant just saw your other thread. Go to bed and don't keep reading scary stuff! I hope some sleep helps.

BWMON they would have to be Quorn bacon sarnies.

Is there evidence of sustained human-to-human transmission yet, or is it contact with pigs only? I think it's impossible to produce a vaccine until there is h-to-h transmission, as that involves a virus mutation.

Anyway, latest WHO update is here.

Ivykaty44 · 25/04/2009 22:04

Yes I do beleive there is evidence of transmition between humans and 60 people have died already and 1000 people have been effected with the illness - so a high death rate if caught.

They seem to think that some flu jabs will combat the illness - who knows the vulnerable may still get by as they have had jabs.

The last big one was after WW1, ore died of the flu than in the war.....

Meglet · 25/04/2009 22:04

Radio 4 news just said it is human to human.

OP posts:
Ivykaty44 · 25/04/2009 22:07

We will be fine... nothing to worry about

merlinthehappypig · 25/04/2009 22:12

I read there have been, (non-fatal), cases in Texas where my brother lives, and even though I know Texas is HUGE I am worried. Even more worried since dh pointed out that all it takes is for someone infected to travel on a plane, (we live near Gatwick). He was joking but I know I will worry about it now.

AmazingMabel · 25/04/2009 22:13

merlin, why would he be joking? It's true. It probably arived at Heathrow/Gatwick this morning.

TwoIfBySea · 25/04/2009 22:14

Don't mean to put the wasp down the knickers here but NHS 24 have been doing extra training for a flu pandemic. So preparations have started then.

Wheres my hankies?

Flightattendant25 · 25/04/2009 22:14

stop it you lot

really stop it

AmazingMabel · 25/04/2009 22:14

Or days previously in fact given an incubation period.
