I'm with Laurie. Takeaway is hardly ideal food for toddlers (I'm guessing it's cheaper because the adults continue to eat whatever the f£!@ they like and the kids just get given whatever's left at the end - hence NO additional outlay for kids' food) but I think the key point here is the water. Human beings can survive on surprisingly poor nutrition as long as they're getting enough calories. I doubt Meat Feast Cordial contains many.

I would be willing to bet any amount of money that the parents have learning disabilities or drug/alcohol dependencies and should have been closely supervised.

it's the fact they were actually "feeding" them mainly water that seems to have been the real problem.... ie they were not getting hardly any calories or nutrients and thus were v v weak and their development suffered. obviously v neglectful and dangerous.....

but some of these posts seem focused on the wrong thing to me.... children in uk dont get taken into care because the eat only value burgers / chips / crisps and sweets do they. many children have totally crap diet, as do many adults. anyone remember the little girl on jamies ministry of food programme on tv who had doner kebab for her tea EVERY NIGHT?

I mind a 13m old and just cant imagine her not being able to hold her head up, she is so strong and fast. As another poster said how hard is it to boil and blend some veg or buy a good jar of food?

Can't believe lack of common sense some people have. Cruel , cruel world. It's really not fair that some people can have kids and neglect them, when thousands can't conceive.
