It's an effort to introduce US social values. It has had a mixed reaction though.

The people in Dubai just don't get it, though the people in Abu Dhabi do.

Haaaa. This really wasn't thought through was it. The Simpsons would have been better.

That's bloody funny!

Ledodgy · 11/04/2009 18:48

Fluffybunny's post is even funnier!

HecAteTheEasterBunny · 11/04/2009 20:27

flintstones.
abu dhabi do.
yabba dabba dooooo.

missorinoco · 11/04/2009 20:30

now feeling very thick, but you have made a fatly pregnant woman chuckle.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 11/04/2009 20:33

arf!

Trouvere · 12/04/2009 08:35

The Simpsons (Al Shamshoon!) has been broadcast in Arab countries for years - heavily edited to remove Homer's (well, Omar's) beer and "wonderful, magical animal" fixation. It flopped.

CoteDAzur · 12/04/2009 08:43

How is this news? (except, possibly, if your interest of Muslim countries started after 9/11 and you think they all live in caves & beat their wives in burqas )

I grew up in a Western-friendly Muslim country (yes, they do exist ) watching not only Flintstones, Simpsons, etc but also Jetsons before them. About 30 years ago. None was edited to remove alcohol references.

Ponders · 12/04/2009 10:11

It's a joke, cote (Abu Dhabi do = yabba-dabba-do)

(But I needed it explained to me too, fluffy )

gavel · 12/04/2009 11:36

ROFL at not getting that it's a joke.

Pan · 12/04/2009 13:17

Cote, and anyone else possibly offended. It was a joke. And putting it in NEWS gives it a sort of gravitas, intitally, that acts as a significant counterpoint to the frivolous levity it delivers. I do appreciate how tricky telling one of these round here can be. It CAN work on the Simpsons as well, which is fine. As you were.

Not offended. Just irritated at "What you mean there are western friendy muslim countries out there".

Ponders · 12/04/2009 20:12

I suspect 10greenbottles was also joking, cote.

Lighten up a little, love

fuzzywuzzy · 12/04/2009 20:16

I didn't get the joke either, wasn't remotely offended, tho a bit as Pan usually makes sense (even if I don't always agree with him).

Deeeja · 13/04/2009 14:12

Actually I am not offended about the yabba dabba doo bit, but am offended by the 'western friendly muslim countries' bit. I think that is offensive especially in the current climate. What does 'western friendly' mean exactly?
That if a muslim country objects to their country being invaded by 'western' troops, that they are 'terrorist' nations, and all those who try to fight back are obviously 'criminals'
I realise this is probably opening up an old debate, but this definately offends me.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/04/2009 15:30

As flat as a pan-cake.

PadDad · 13/04/2009 16:02

'western-friendly muslim countries'
'muslim-friendly western countries?'
'country-friendly western muslims?'

Are there any country & western-friendly muslims out there?

AIBO?

Pan · 13/04/2009 18:34

Well, tbh, as a piece of humour it works wonderfully, although on a VERY simplistic level. As a comment on the geo-political/religious state of the world, it adds nothing. But it wasn't supposed to. Do please smile at it. But don't pull it to pieces. What does "western friendly mean?" Use your imagination?

it's still funny though.
