here

"Speaking on Christian O'Connell's Absolute Radio show the day after the joke was broadcast, the star said it was a "silly little play on words".

He added: "It seems that someone has taken offence or someone is upset by it and for that of course I'm sorry."

Despite no complaints having been made to the station, an Absolute spokeswoman said the joke was "unacceptable".

"The comments made by David Jason were unacceptable and Christian O'Connell distanced himself from them live on air.

"We consider the views of our listeners to be very important and have received no complaints about these comments. "

the Joke was "What do you call a Pakistani cloakroom attendant?"

A "Mahatma coat."

Hmmmmm - haven't seen any front page headlines about this, did I miss them?

One of Terry Wogan's regular TOG correspondents is called "Mahatma Coat". Does he have to apologise for "racism" too?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/03/2009 14:50

I don't get the joke

Really. I just don't understand it

kerryk · 26/03/2009 14:51

i really dont get that joke at all

i love david jason though and dont think that was a rasict joke.

you cant mention anything about other nationalities these days without it being taken out of context and being branded a rasist.

donnie · 26/03/2009 14:52

I don't think it is racist either. I agree with reality - it is a play on words.

BarStoolCobra · 26/03/2009 14:52

its a play on words
mahatama ghandi nobbos!

FigmentOfYourImagination · 26/03/2009 14:52

It's supposed to sound like My Hat My Coat (as in what you'd hang in a cloakroom)

Given that Mahatma Ghandi wasn't even from Pakistan the joke fails again

Disenchanted3 · 26/03/2009 14:52

my hat, my coat

I don't think its racist and I did have a giggle!

choccyp1g · 26/03/2009 14:52

The 2.30 joke is racist, because it implies that chinese people talk like babies.

I think the joke would work just as well if you say what time does a toddler go to the dentist?

The Cloakroom joke is ignorant because surely Mahatma refers to Ghandi who was Indian. It implies that all Pakistani/Indian people have the same names.

Plus it's not funny

Rhubarb · 26/03/2009 14:52

MyHatMy Coat

Mahatma Coat

Now do you see? FGS this is so not racist!

moondog · 26/03/2009 14:53

FFS
It's a play on Mahatma Gandhi (and it worries me more that folk don't know that fact.)

Rhubarb · 26/03/2009 14:53

OFFS

What was that word for taking yourself off a thread?

Oh yeah PARP!

Curiousmama · 26/03/2009 14:56

choccy have never told that joke as in a Chinese person going to the dentist but just 'Guess what time I'm going to dentist?'
Not that I go around telling crap jokes frequently

The world's getting a bit too PC in my opinion.

StercusAccidit · 26/03/2009 14:56

Rhubarb FARTED

Leaves thread as well cos this is going to get silly

I got called lurch the other day.. is this heightist?

FigmentOfYourImagination · 26/03/2009 14:57

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 26/03/2009 14:58

i don't see it as racist.
not unlike the "what do you call an irish pornstar"
"phil mcgee"

but surely his apology should be the end of it. he didn't intend to cause offence, but upon recognising that it has caused some offence has apologised that he was the reason for this offence wether intentional or not. so has said sorry to those people.
