"?Please,? he said. ?Just stop writing everything down, and selling it, and then pretending you haven?t. I?m begging you.? Actually, the way he said it was even more heartrending than that. But I went off to get my Dictaphone, and he just wouldn?t say it again. He was such a sweet boy. When did he become so selfish?

Friday

A family meeting over breakfast. The older boy doesn?t come. He?s angry because there was an anonymous column in the newspapers this morning about a mother whose son begs her to stop writing anonymous columns in the newspapers. I denied everything, but he doesn?t believe me. I feel so guilty about lying to him. I suppose I?ll have to write an anonymous column about it."

hehe

"Our other boy comes round. He?s the one who brought shame on our family by selling his story to the Daily Mail, rather than to a publisher or a left-leaning broadsheet, like he was brought up to do."
