So some women don't want children, but why the need to attack those that do so aggressively?

There are plenty of people that bore the hell out of me. Each to their own. You don't have to speak to them again.

Been reading Observer Woman by any chance, blackrock?

blackrock · 08/02/2009 09:24

I just don't like the divisive nature of such articles. I am sure there are mothers and non mothers that would annoy each and every woman. I felt the need to say something about what I have just read.

I didn't interpret Rachel Cooke's article as an attack on women who have children. She seemed mostly to be talking about the sort of self-centred baby bore that I swore to myself I would never become when I got pregnant with my daughter, and make strident efforts not to be when I'm with friends who don't have children. But I think you've got a point too, blackrock, in that lots of people can be boring about any subject, and frequently are.

I think Cooke's point about how the fetishism of motherhood ties in with our relentless consumerism in other areas of life is really interesting. I've often been baffled by the number of threads both here and elsewhere, dissecting the pros and cons of various branded baby paraphenalia in exhaustive detail. She's bang on about the buggy-as-status-symbol: I see the prices of Quinnies and Bugaboos and the like and wonder if people have succumbed to some sort of collective insanity.

And surely anyone with eyes and ears would agree with her that parenthood frequently is competitive. You can choose to opt out of that whole thing, for sure, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist and doesn't bear commenting on.

And I utterly loathe the phrase Alpha Mummy too. It makes me want to throw thing.
