what do we think about this then? I'm thinking not to be encouraged (and I know this would not be allowed in the UK), although I have immense sympathy and it probably is true that they have a huge estended family to help out...

I think there's a difference between what can happen naturally, and what is ethically right for doctors to do in terms of intervention. I don't think it's for us to judge whether or not a particular woman should get pregnant, but I do think it's right that society as a whole debates whether doctors should intervene to assist conception in cases where there are complex moral and ethical issues. In this case, there are ethical issues and that is why in this country this procedure would not have been permitted. Clearly in other countries either different decisions have been made, or there has not been the same type of debate.

The views on this thread that there is something inherently wrong about a 70 year old woman being treated to allow her to bear a child are not intended to be a value judgment about this particular family, they are about whether in general this is something that doctors should be doing.

I think it's a bit daft personally, but who am I to judge, parenting is hard at any age, let's face it...

Not sure there are any countries where childbearing happens regularly and without medical intervention at 70 though.
