How do we initiate our kids about their bodies and minds, to help them be safe and sound?

Early puberty story here

This story got me thinking about how I need to be prepared and supportive of my kids, their puberty and mental development. What we eat, how we think, how fast we appear to grow up, yet this story stated that logic and judgement receptors arent fully developed in the brain till 25 to 30 years!

I have often thought about how school teaches you the abc of life but not the xyz - about how to be wise and sound in decisions you make.

Not sure how to respond tbh.

I know my dad said he wouldn't accept me as an adult until I was 21 - but then I have met plenty of parents (on MN and in rl) who are just as much, if not more informed about life and parenthood than I am.

The abc is for school, the xyz is for parents imo.

There is a very good programme now in Scottish schools about the xyz of life, as you put it.

AlthoughI also agre with mercy that the responsibility should sit with parents where possible.

I agree, xyz for parents is the first place this kind of learning should be... but the form/type of abc taught is quite uniform and then the way xyz is taught is diverse! I have often felt school did not teach me enough about life and I wanted more from my school than just abc. Moments stand out in my memory when a teacher did teach me about being a woman, a person... guess there was a vacuum of requirement right there.

Although (never say never but at this point) I have my kids going the mainstream scholastic path, I am interested in the Montessori method. Just been looking online for stuff I can do at home (found this site, Here )
