.....(quoted from FT online 'that climate change is not man-made...' and '...said she did not want to get into an argument over the causes of global warming and referred to cyclical variations in climate.'

Well partly because of the speed of change mabana and its correlation with our output of CO2.

In the past when the world has been hotter, there's been more CO2 in the atmosphere, and vice versa. We chuck out a load of CO2 (and other greenhouse gases) and it gets hotter in a proprtional, measurable pattern. It doesn't mean there may not be natural variations as well - but that this spike is almost certainly related to emissions.

PrimulaVeris · 03/10/2008 14:13

Mab - yes there have been climatic cycles on the planet, but the rate of change is now v. rapid. It's now pretty well accepted in the scinetific community that we're not just in a warmer cycle and that current changes are man made.

I also fail to get wtf a hockey mom actually is ....

ronshar · 03/10/2008 14:14

It is a kind of clan thing with American mums. They are generally the kind of mums who do everything with/for their darling talented Ice Hockey playing offspring. Normally boys! They are quite aggressive and protective of their team.

rookiemater · 03/10/2008 14:14

Yes me too about the hockey mom stuff. What on earth does it mean ? Clearly she has to work very hard as a politician so it is unfeasible that she would be there to watch her childrens games or do the normal "Mom" ( hate that word shudder) stuff. Interesting though that in the US she isn't being demonized though for having a career and children. Imagine a similar scenario in the UK the Daily Mail would be going mad.

Oh btw my father is a scientist and doesn't believe in global warming. However he is also a bit of a loon, so wouldn't put too much store on his thoughts.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 14:15

she means a regular, normal, suburban, hands on mum. The usual and very common term is 'soccer mom' - who drives a 4x4 type car, has a dog, two or more kids, maybe volunteers or has a part time job, goes to Church on Sundays, and takes the kids to activities - Mrs America, in other words. But in Alaska the main sport is hockey, so she's a 'hockey mom'

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:15

mabana - ice core research shows that CO2 concentrations have never been as high as they are now and they are increasing rapidly. Only explanation that fits the scientific evidence is man-made.

Grand Canyon - there's a book out (sold in the GC National Park too) stating the biblical explantion of the GC. Its 5000 years old apparently.

Isn't 'hocley mom' like 'soccer mom' (and dontahc just hate 'mom')

clarinsgirl · 03/10/2008 14:15

My sentiments exactly Ronshar!

BTW, I don't think Greenland is named because it was once green (in fact some of it green now). Green is a mis-translation of 'grund' - Danish for ground.

All irrelevant anyway, the woman is loopy.

And also, as has been pointed out, those scientists that don't accept this almost always have an agenda. Eg they are being paid by an oil company. Scientists with no conflict of interests overwhelmingly conclude that it is a real effect.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 14:17

I was surprised by the graph, as unless it is wrong, it seemed to show fairly regular intervals of hot and cold. I'm not saying that climate change isn't man made, but I am aware of previous shifts of a similar nature (frozen Thames in Tudor times, wine growing in Scotland in Medieval times etc) and have wondered what caused them, and why is this smallish shift so different.

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:18

I was reading about how the permafrost was melting for the first time in thousands of years so Eskimo and Inuit villages were sinking and their whole way of life was vanishing. Moving the villages will cost millions and they are well pissed off cos its the emissions of the main population of the US buggering up what is a reasonably sustainable way of life.
They live in Alaska and Ms Palin hasn't been great about helping them out.

Oh, and the whole making women who have been raped pay for the rape testing kit. makes you feel sik.

mabanana · 03/10/2008 14:18

has anyone got a link to teh Co2 stuff?

snowleopard · 03/10/2008 14:19

The hockey mom thing is part of her "selling point" that she is normal and everyday, like her politics is some kind of amateur hobby. My arse. I think she's extremely politically aggressive and canny going by the reports of what's gone on in her previous posts.

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:20

its not just temp mabana but 'climate shift' that is the issue. When the North Atlantic Conveyer switches off us in northern Europe, currently warmed by the gulf Stream will actually have very bitter much colder winters. Longer too. Like Canada.
Wont do our food prduction a whole host of good. And Sub-Saharan Africa will get even dryer leading to poulation shifts as poeple head towards where the food and water is.

ronshar · 03/10/2008 14:20

The book has sold out to who exactly? The nuttters?
Also when the bible was written had they seen the GC? I mean I thought the Native Americans lived there for a long time but were undiscovered until we decided to finish their nice, peaceful, happy party a few hundred years ago?
I definitely dont know the bible very well but I have missed the pigramige(SP?) across the ocean by anyone in those days!

PrimulaVeris · 03/10/2008 14:21

Clarins - Greenland actually named by Icelandic settlers. Was one of the first proerty cons by its discoverer, Erik the Red, who on returnign to Iceland recrutied Settlers by calling it Greenland, hoping more people would be encouraged to go there - 1st chapter of Graenlandiga Saga

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:21

mabana here

Leoloopydoo · 03/10/2008 14:22

Hockey mum is the mother of a son who plays ice hockey.
dh plays ice hockey and I have 3 boys who we will encourage to play, what the hell does that make me as a hockey wife and mother , I don't appreciate being compared to a dog !

natural variations do happen due to volcanic activities etc, but nature has been able to rebalance it again. but as we are destroying forests which is the most important thing to reduce the green house gases and continuing to pump out huge amounts of green house gases there is no way for nature to rebalance again.

[[http://www.aip.org/history/climate/co2.htm long and sciency but has a lot of answers]

PrimulaVeris · 03/10/2008 14:22

Royal Society source on climate change

snowleopard · 03/10/2008 14:22

bum

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:24

ronshar - the continents were all joined together 5000 years ago so Noah could do his colecting all the aniamls quickly. Then they moved apart. Not really continental drift, more like continental sprinting! The GC was formed at this time. Apparently.
I used to live among Creationists and Young Earthers in Virginia. sigh.

Peachy · 03/10/2008 14:24

Two years ago I did ethics at Uni- I was the only person who voted in a debate that climate change was even partly caused by man
!
the rest felt that it was entiely natural and man could and should endeavour to do nothing

which is basically generational suicide

SaintRiven · 03/10/2008 14:25

here
there ya go

snowleopard · 03/10/2008 14:25
