Absolutely disgusting. But for reasons beyond my comprehension, it doesnt seem to have provoked much moral outrage on here.
Folk seem to react more to an Hollywood actress's crass comments than this.

i heard about this on the radio few days ago, poor babies.

lulumama · 16/09/2008 16:42

that is horrific.

how can it have got so contaminated ? why would suppliers add the chemical? surely it is sealed in the factory?

hideous.

charchargabor · 16/09/2008 16:46

Oh good Lord, that is disgraceful! And so sad for those poor babies and their families

hecate · 16/09/2008 16:49

That is awful. And more awful if the reporting is accurate that the chinese government is trying to prevent reporting of it to what? avoid anything negative being said

FinallyGotDyson · 16/09/2008 16:50

lulu - it was added deliberately to make it look like it had more protein in it.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 16/09/2008 16:51

lulumama · 16/09/2008 16:52

unfarkingbelievable...

FinallyGotDyson · 16/09/2008 16:56

Initial story came to me via hunkermunker and on her website

I then followed it up on BBC news online.

2 people arrested so far in connection with this. seems like the chinese were warned about this about a month before the story broke.

lulumama · 16/09/2008 17:05

oh, i thought you were hunker!

BabiesEverywhere · 16/09/2008 17:30

Poor Babies

lulumama · 16/09/2008 17:31

BE, how are you and DS doing

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 16/09/2008 17:34

not the first time there has been issues with formula in China

There was widespread selling of formula that had little or no nutritional value in it, poor babies died from malnutrition

LurkerOfTheUniverse · 16/09/2008 17:35

that's communism for you

BabiesEverywhere · 16/09/2008 19:23

We are doing fine...DS loves to nurse (a lot and often) He has been sleeping on my lap and just now he laughed and smiled in his sleep....Honestly I could just eat him, he is so sweet

evangelina · 16/09/2008 21:24

I watched this on the news tonight and was horrified. It reminds me of Victorian England when sawdust and whatever was added to poor people's bread. Unbelievable that this could happen to babies in the modern world. I was warming to China after the Olympics, but this just reinforces the dangers of a totalitarian state.

FinallyGotDyson · 16/09/2008 21:42

LOL lulu

She's still away, doing lots of RL things, but, still keeps an ear to the nork ground

I question whether a totalitarian/communist state caused this problem. It may have covered up the problem after the fact which i agree is wrong.

It is a capitalist greed thing to add melamine to powdered cow's milk in order to fake it's properties.

Formula manufacture is just another way for companies to make a profit. Looking at the way it is made and marketed in most of the world, that is, including China.

evangelina · 17/09/2008 10:56

Agree foxytocin, it's the greater ability of a totalitarian state to cover it up or hinder internet type debate about it which bothers me but may be unfounded- I don't really know enough about China.

spicemonster · 17/09/2008 11:24

There are now more than 6000 babies affected - and more than 150 diagnosed with acute liver failure. God that's so fucked up [mad]

OMG this is horrifying I guess it brings to home the dangers of formula doesn't it?

I have to admit I've always been slightly ignorant to the dangers and I did use formula through choice as I didn't want to BF but this story does scare me and maybe even changed my mind about it now.

Well defo going to try BF next time now!

I can't believe they knew about it and ddidn't say anything. Also the links next to the story sow how often it actually happens in other places, how long will it be before it happens here?

It's very scary and sad.
