Mumsnet for Poet Laureate

Please add a verse.

I see Queen Liz in her mother of the bride dress and coat ensemble,
Unchanged in colour and cut throughout her long reign,
Same old, same old, but new.

Her recession weary subjects battle on in tunics not from Primark,
Better an ethical tunic today and an Individual Voluntary Agreement later,
Than a Chinese child appliqueing a Western conscience.

The Grandsons, beyond the help of grade inflation, tsk,
And Waity Katy, what does she do?
Apart from wait, and cover her ears to calls for "doors to manual" from the thinning grandson's boozy chums.

Please add a verse/ write a new poem.

Let's hope Madamez's shift falls in the dead of night, when Queenie is fast asleep. The shock might otherwise precipitate a constitutional crisis.

Threadie - I'm so jealous. Is that a sapphic stanza?

OP posts:
Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:11

Threadie - Or is it simply dactylic pentameter?

OP posts:
Threadwworm · 10/09/2008 23:12

No. You should never use a sapphic stanza in the same construct as a homophobe.

Threadwworm · 10/09/2008 23:13

And clearly a dactylic pentameter is an olympic event for dinosaurs.

Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:15

Do you think we can expect a collective commission very soon?

She really is scouring Fenton, you know.

Lol at academic hair.

Threadie, duck! She's hurling homophobes.

Threadwworm · 10/09/2008 23:15

Am Isensing from this thread that the position of p. laureat is up for grabs at the moment? I didn't know that.

Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:15

How many feet does a dinosaur have?

OP posts:

x-posts re homophobes

double lol at olive oil

onebatmother · 10/09/2008 23:18

forget about dinosaurs, I'd worry more about your open couplet swedes. What with that and the oily blouse, you might attract the wrong sort of attention.

Oilily Onebat.

Threadwworm · 10/09/2008 23:22

Who is this Fenton, anyway? And does he have a thing about being scoured by oily women?

Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:27

James Fenton book here It is a brilliant book. I bought it to help DS1 (with the poetry part of his GCSE) and it helped enormously. I recommend it.

Oh gosh that A Motion link is really awful. Poor man.

Though I am a bit surprised that he didn't anticipate that his critical currency might be diminished (and his style cramped) by such a close association with the most famously parochial, in terms of its taste and ideas, family in the country.

I'm not sure about a collective laureate. Some of us can't do proper poetry. So:

Said the Queen,"I cannot do better,
For a poet than choose a Mumsnetter.
I'll make her a Dame,
OneBatMother by name"
But the grumpy old Duke wouldn't let 'er.

Bloody hell threadie! That's astonishing. What a brilliant boy - will you tell him you;ve shown us or will that embarrass him? If you do, will you tell him how impressed I was? Ten!

LOL Grimma! Damn that duke.

Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:40

Threadie - I'm so impressed. What a wonderful young man.

OP posts:
Threadwworm · 10/09/2008 23:41

Thanks very much. (I don't think he'd mind me linking to it.)

GrimmaTheNome · 10/09/2008 23:42

No threadie - far too much spirit for the dull ceremony of laureatship!

From looking at the excerpt of the Fenton book I now realise my DD must be parodying Gawain - 'wlonk' is just her sort of spelling.

Swedes · 10/09/2008 23:44

George wrote this last year - it was published in the school magazine.

The Circus
Painted faces and diablos were flashing all about. Lions were swimming around my head like a kaleidoscope. The animals racing through the gate. Only growls of satisfaction could be heard. The clown was weeping for all the animals formerly of the circus were free. The clown was to carry on ... alone!
