Jesus It dosen't bear thinking about does it, I've just watched the story on the 1,00pm news.

Awful, thankfully the girl is stable in hospital.

Dog is still missing though

Not the sort of place I would expect to find a drain of that sort, I must say. Very lucky little girl and well done that dad!

WendyWeber · 09/09/2008 10:40

You wouldn't expect there to be a storm drain in the middle of a playing field though, would you? I don't think playing there was irresponsible at all.

Am very impressed with the dad - but sad about the dog - but did smirk at Imnotok's typo anyway

foxytocin · 09/09/2008 10:41

I believe the man is local as he knew where the storm drain exited. That field looks like the same one where a few years ago 2 women died when an art display come maze thing got caught by a gust of wind and went airborne with several people inside it.

i think it was only 70 meters from the river fio.

FAQ · 09/09/2008 10:45

foxytocin - if I'd had the wherewithal to stop and think about it in a situation like that I would probably have assume a storm drain would exit into the river...

morningpaper · 09/09/2008 10:47

I wouldn't think 'aha! this is clearly a storm drain and will therefore enter the river"

It looks a LONG WAY in the video doesn't it?

Apparently the manhole cover popped off because of the flood - very common occurence really

Looks a long way doesn't it? He really was having to think fast. Just listened to the video. Not sure I'd have been able to think straght at all - I'd ahve just been panicking and in a mess.

Nbg · 09/09/2008 11:03

Oh god, this happened 5 mins from my house!

How awful

WendyWeber · 09/09/2008 11:04

It's also amazing that she was just there in the water when he got to the river & hadn't already been swept downstream.

Nbg · 09/09/2008 11:11

Oh no it isnt.
Thought it was Leeming.

Such quick thinking from the dad.

foxytocin · 09/09/2008 12:05

I didn't know you were 'local', nbg.

foxytocin · 09/09/2008 12:07

For me another amazing thing is that she did not get stuck in the storm drain along with a bunch of rubbish which normally have these things blocked up. It doesn't bear thinking about. Dh found it touching because he could put himself in the dad's shoes.
