It says she lost custody of her children, does his mean she never gets them back? Or they are placed with family members or foster carers until she serves her sentence?

I just knew, when reading the article that the first comment I would read would be along the lines of "it's her own fault for having so many children"......Yes, because that solves the problem, doesn't it? What shall we do with this woman, in a state? Turn back time!!!

The only people who belong in jail are violent offenders.

I don't think she will lose custody permanently unless the local authority already has grave concerns about their safety. What a sad sad case. It would be nice to think that they might now get the help they need and that the mum will serve a suspended sentence.

I wonder whether she was getting DLA for her 3 year old (I can't remember what age it can be claimed from - and of course the forms are a nightmare and no-one tells you you're entitled).

I do remember reading somewhere quite a while ago but presented with a woman and a man having committed the same crime and the woman is about 8 times more likely to end up in jail than the man.

And am I missing something, or is there some fairy fucking godmother who gets women pregnant and then swans off?

I was under the impression that it required two people to become pregnant.

Yet not a word about the FATHER(S) of her children and their role in supporting the children they produced.

Oh, no, it's all scorn for her and the 8 children she seemingly reproduced asexually.

That rings true, Jimjams - I've heard people who have worked in prisons saying womens' nicks are full of people who have failed to pay debts or committed relatively petty crimes.

Yes I heard they are full of women who haven't paid their TV license. Did they change the law on that so you can't go to jail for it now?

those comments were evil and as expat said there was no mention of father(s) supporting their children just condemnation for the poor mother, who for all we know had all 8 children to the violent man she has just escaped.

no she did not deserve jail. maybe the father(s) should have been jailed for not providing for their children?

Echo Expat - people should only go to jail if they are a threat to society.

All these women going to jail for debt and their children being taken into care makes me really sad.

The discrepancy between what a man has to do to go to prison and what a woman has to do just highlights the deep gender inequality that is still entrenched in our society. Women are supposed to be good and nice and quiet and toe the line so when they stray from the straight and narrow they must be made an example of.

Just out of curiosity what punishment do you think would be fair?

They threatened to send me to jail a few months ago when we got into a lot of financial trouble and fell behind.
They threatened to send me to prison and suspended it for 3 weeks to review it it was the most awful time I have had I don't think I slept for the three weeks over 500.00 .

I still have not thanked expat for the great advice and reassurance she gave me (dont know if you remember Expat twas about three months ago) so thankyou very much it did help and I got good legal advice .

Needless to say it was horrific I thought I was going to go to prison while people who drink drive and kill people who deal drugs get a community service order .

Community service. Just like the chap who broke a glass bottle across my husband's face - he took 8 stiches right about the brow, and another bottle across the back of my husband's mate's head - he took 25 stitches to the back of the head got for violently assaulting them totally unprovoked when the pub they were sitting in broke out in brawl.

How ridiculous when drunk drivers adn even people who cause death by dangerous driving sometimes escape custodial sentences.

I only ask becaause obviously we have to deter people from commiting crimes.

Threat of prison often does this. But many crimes don't warrant prison. I hadn't thought of community service. I think giving back to the community is a fair way to pay for your crime. But think the threat of prison even for even petty crimes is a better deterrant.

But can understand how it breaks down the system when petty criminals are imprisioned.

There is something which should shame the very core of this crap society.

She had to steal...to buy food.

Not tvs or dvds or fancy designer handbags.

She was buying food.

And yes, while she should be punished for stealing I ask if anyone wouldn't do the same in her shoes. She was buying food, in this country where MPs get £24k to tart up their houses, in this country where people buy and throw away like it doesn't matter, in this country where people whine because the value of their second homes has gone down. Give the woman counselling not bloody jail. Give her help.

I agree that people shouldn't be in prison for non-violent crimes, for the most part, but there's more to this story than appears in the article. She is far from being a first-time offender and is in prison anyway for assault. Presumably a Community Service order would actually be an additional burden on top of a prison sentence.Scotsman report Four of the dc are living with their father, though it would have been refreshing to have had all the circumstances aired in court as to his previous involvement.

My son has just been the victim of card crime perpetrated by his neighbour so I actually feel rather sorry for this woman's neighbours.

What they should do is let her out of jail and then find the father of her 8 children and publicly cane him If men did their jobs and looked after and loved their children and the mother of their children as their number one priority in life this shit wouldn't happen.

Sorry flame me here but the fathers have behaved appalling by abandoning their responsibilities... but ultimately they can not be held accountable for her 17 previous charges recently, history of deception and assault

I feel more sorry for her neighbours and her children.
