I saw the Queen's hat once. Didn't make me feel inferior.

It was when I was 17 and we had our German Exchange students at school. Went to G-Mex in Manchester to see the Queen. All the Germans were wetting themselves with excitement and getting told off by the Police for climbing up lamp-posts to get a better picture of her. All us cynical and oh-so-cool 17 year old Brits were sitting on the pavement smoking and waiting for it to be over so we could go to McDonald's.

snafu · 11/02/2005 08:21

Our whole school made to wait outside for hours in the snow once just to see Brenda's car drive past the school gates. Think it must have been Jubilee year. I was probably 4, ffs! Think that's why I hate them now. She was in her lovely warm car, I was outside in a snowdrift with my knees turning blue, my Union Jack drooping.

sweetkitty · 11/02/2005 12:13

Prince Charles shook my hand and asked me if I was cold, of course I was cold I was waiting for 4 hours in the cold to see you. Got a day off school though and he flew in in his helicopter onto our local playing fields was a big day in our town they even painted over the graffiti!!!

RTKangaMummy · 11/02/2005 12:19

How would you like to have the whole of your year organized for you down to the last hour?

I would hate it

No days, just to do as I wanted or to go where I want.

Have photographers following you everywhere?

The Queen visited ds2's uni a few years back. While the students were waiting, a massive cheer went up and shouts of "She's here, she's here!" And who should then hove into view? None other than Jenny Bond!!

Tortington · 11/02/2005 22:52

mt heart bleeds kanga !!!

as do my chuffin taxes

does camilla get 12 mill from the duchey of cornwall now or what - and how much does charles get?

give it me - i'll have my day organised down to the last minute as long as i dont have to sweep the floor, do the homework and all the other mundanities that my taxes pay for the royals to miss

RTKangaMummy · 11/02/2005 23:04

Ok I know I am in minority

And I will shut up now

I'm more excited about Deirdre and Ken. Will they or won't they? If they do, will she wear a bad belt?

Will Camilla come galloping up the aisle, whinnying and snorting in a majestic fashion?

80sMum · 11/02/2005 23:16

Well, if Prince Charles can grab a bit of happiness by marrying Camilla, I say good luck to him. He has never led a 'normal' life and never will. Of course, he is massively privileged - but there's more to life than wealth and status.
There is no amount of money that anyone could throw at me that would make me agree to become a 'major royal.' Their lives are not real lives; they're stage-managed and manipulated, mere puppets, not real people at all. No wonder they're all slightly barmy!

Caligula · 11/02/2005 23:34

Quite right 80smum. I'm always a bit perplexed by royalists, because the life of the Royal Family, money or not, is so dreadful, that I don't know why anyone wants to condemn yet another human being to be born into it. It's a form of torture. Staunch royalists always say they wouldn't like to change places with the royal family, so why do they condemn poor Mr Windsor to do it?

I'm genuinely flummoxed by it.

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 23:50

Caligs - Deidre and Ken DO but not before Ray comes back - hope I haven't spoiled it for you

Joolstoo · 11/02/2005 23:51

Re the Royal bit - I suppose its a safety thing for some people and ALL that history - you can't deny its fascinating stuff and continues to be so!

Caligula · 12/02/2005 14:42

RAY comes back???? RAY??? But he hasn't been seen for thirty years!

Not since the days when members of the royal family didn't get divorces!

Joolstoo · 12/02/2005 14:44

LOL

he's 61 in RL!

I think theres going to be more trouble in the 'Street' - no change there then.

PS - Blanche had some CLASS lines the other night.

"its a fine line between Jackie Onassis and Roy Orbison2 PMSL!

Joolstoo · 12/02/2005 14:45

don't know where the '2' came from?

marthamoo · 12/02/2005 14:46

Could it be a shotgun wedding? Is Camilla up the duff? Can you imagine their offspring? The culmination of all those centuries of in-breeding on both sides.

Joolstoo · 12/02/2005 14:47

well Ken IS quite fertile - but I think Deidre might burst her neck if she has to go into labour again

Caligula · 12/02/2005 14:52

Think they'd look a bit like this

(Has a look of Camilla, I think)

marthamoo · 12/02/2005 15:25

LOL, Caligula - just need to swap the spear for a polo stick (club, bat, racquet - whatever they are called)

marthamoo · 12/02/2005 15:25

Sword not spear.
