BBC report

I'm getting a bit concerned about the BBC's standards of English:

He pondered up the stairs???? Soliloquising as he went, perhaps.

"Nicola was in the shed the day before, so we were lucky in a sense."

ROFL

It's a sweet story, but why is it newsworthy? Is it 'cos they're doctors that got caught out? Is it just to highlight the opportunistic use of the word "pondered"? Very rum, very rum indeed.

"I was hoping to get a new bathroom suite but I'm quite attached to this one now".

Pondered is a quote. Maybe the poor woman is still in shock?!

Raxacoricogizmopatorius · 03/07/2008 12:31

Oh that's funny! And a nice story too.

I think she was using pondered deliberately, tbh, to imply he was moving slowly thinking she was being a drama queen.

MsDemeanor · 03/07/2008 12:32

I think it is just a typo. They meant to put 'pounded'

MsDemeanor · 03/07/2008 12:33

or 'wandered'. Not pondered.

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 12:33

Ohhh, you think she did say pondered? I thought it was an aural typo for pounded!

OP posts:
MsDemeanor · 03/07/2008 12:34

Nah, doesn't make any sense. It's a typo.

WendyWeber · 03/07/2008 12:38

I wondered if it might be a Scots usage?

I think she used pondered to convey the lack of a sense of urgency. That her dh strolled up the stairs, taking his time, having failed to appreciate that the poor woman was in labour.

"Ava Murchie was none the worse for her bath birth..."
"Peter added: "She seems very resilient, but no wonder having been born in the bath"
fgS! she was born in the water! how terrifically bizarre and off the wall
