It's sensationalist, interviews someone with half a brain cell - well it is the DM - but is there any 'grain' of truth in it?

Hmm - F and Z - maybe I should caveat my remarks then wiht the preface that this book ( about pregnant vegans and babies) was very old - I recall River Phoenix was featured as a case study - he was about 12 at the time so book was about 26 yrs old!!!I'm sure modern technology etc have made things much easier!!!

yes I think things really are easier now and vegans usually take inspiration from other cultures for their meals, rather than trying to recreate rather odd versions of traditional meat and 2 veg meals

plus we have more knowledge about nutrition now - it used to be thought that you had to 'combine' different kinds of protein at each meal, to get all the essential amino acids as vegetable proteins were thought to be 'second class' - this idea is now completely discredited

plus when a lot of these recipe books were written, there were not the same wholefoods widely available in ordinary shops as there are now
I think people used to have to soak their own beans and so on all the time - now you can buy tinned and so on if you can't be bothered
plus any supermarket will sell brown rice, tofu, tahini, soya milk etc
you don't have to trek out to Pulse Magic or whatever to get suitable nutritious foods

F & Z - did read your reply and just posting to say I did so you didn't think you posted twice at the end of that thread in vain....

No you don’t have to be a nutritionist or plan it down to a tee. You just have to follow the advice given by the vegan Society and of course there are many other places you can get nutritional advice from. I have put on weight since becoming vegan and feel so much better energise wise. I agree with the sweetener thing though but sugar and saturated fat are bad. So people should consume less of these and more healthy fats
