I hear he has been suspended for 3 months. Did he really think he could pass other people's work off as his own? Did the fame just go to his head?

eight i think aitch

notnowbernard · 20/06/2008 23:12

BUt this is one of my concerns, really...

I think I'd feel a bit uncomfortable finding myself in Dr. Persaud's clinic having seen him on This Morning a few days before, for example

bundle · 20/06/2008 23:13

nnb i make a medical programme and the dr who presents it is a gp. his patients actually quite like him doing it, well, that's what they tell him

AitchNunsnet · 20/06/2008 23:14

dunno, i always thought he was pretty thorough in his responses, a lot better than that soppy angel mutanda or whatever her name is. and they needed someone there to stop richard diagnosing everyone who called in with Post-natal Depression.

pointydog · 20/06/2008 23:14

oh I don't know. If you had to see a psychologist wouldn't you want a personable, sense-speaking, non-jargon sorta guy. I little bit of rajjy kindness woulda gone a long way

AitchNunsnet · 20/06/2008 23:14

bundle you're not in glasgow are you?

pointydog · 20/06/2008 23:15

pointydog · 20/06/2008 23:15

raj is totally radge, man

EtonsMessCat · 20/06/2008 23:16

A cheat is a cheat, regardless of his profession/celebrity status.

Tough shit on him.

You break the rules, you pay the price. He will be fine, I am sure he has a stash to keep him going in old age.

AitchNunsnet · 20/06/2008 23:18

ah, well you can breathe again, bundle. i Do Not Know You.

pointydog · 20/06/2008 23:18

in many fields I don;t think being a cheat would matter. In academia, I think it's major league. The boy done wrong. Stripped of integrity

nooka · 20/06/2008 23:22

Very foolish. The rules on acknowledging others research and referencing properly are very clearly set out, and as an academic he will have known this perfectly well.

However notnowbernard need not worry that he is also defrauding the NHS, he will be on sessional rates with allowance for his academic role. Not that dissimilar to how private practice works really.

notnowbernard · 20/06/2008 23:28

Walking into his clinic, as a patient, I think I would find it intimidating

He may well have bundles of positive warmth and human regard but at the end of the day he has put himself out there as a celebrity shrink

And me as an everyday punter... I would struggle with that scenario

TotalChaos · 21/06/2008 09:24

as someone who has been a previous punter of psychiatrists, I think I would find it reassuring that he's been on the telly - as I wouldn't feel I was walking into say a first appointment relatively cold, but would feel I knew a bit about how him? I suppose as well it's with my former outpatient hat on that I think it's a shame he was on suspended, as I wouldn't want to end up having to wait an extra 3 months for another appointment or deal with someone completely new whilst the suspension was dealt with. I would be surprised if the suspension didn't mean some clinics were temporarily cancelled.

bundle · 21/06/2008 20:42

aitch

i wouldn't mind if you did know me

Aitch · 22/06/2008 15:34

how gracious of you, ma'am...

Aitch · 22/06/2008 15:35

Wink Grin

verona · 23/06/2008 10:11

I used to work at the Maudsley (he's a consultant psych in Croydon which is part of the same Trust).
I knew a couple of nurses who had the dubious pleasure of working on the same ward as him. They said he was a nightmare to work with and not that great with patients either. Allegedly, he has loads of pictures of himself on the wall in his office and a bookshelf full of his own books.

Threadwormm · 23/06/2008 10:14

Oh how the mediocre have fallen!

Am loving his disgrace as he always seemed to come out with idiotic banalities as a TV mind punter.

If he was commenting on his own suspension, he would say: 'Individuals who find themselves in this position tend to be disappointed and embarrassed, what we psychiatrists call DAES (disappointed and embarrassed syndrome.'

Walnutshell · 23/06/2008 10:17

LOL at DAES!

And now at last I have a name for my condition.

Why thank you threadwormm.

ruby, In the scientific community it is a case of publish or be damned. He will have secured shed loads of funding from various bodies in order to carry out research, and basically keep himself employed. Whilst i agree that referencing is an absolute nightmare, it is of paramount importance that this is done meticulously. It very much is expected of scientists to be research active alongside other aspects of their career. This involves presenting your work and new findings. This will without exception require the use of other peoples findings and hypotheses in order to introduce/back up what you are presenting. It is also common practise for the more established academics to published reviews and this of course is a reveiw of other peoples work. BUT it MUST be correctly referenced.

Most university lecturers have to be research active, have considerable teaching responsibilities and often an additional admin role to perform. If he has taken on too much be being a well paid celebrity shrink then that is not anyone elses problem but his own.

I have often found watching him uncomfortable as i can see that he is clearly a highly intelligent man. But then he will appear on dumbed down programs pigeon holing everyone. Not sure he has done much to increase my faith in mental health services tbh.

I am sorry that he has been suspended but it must have been BLATANT and deliberate plaigerism for this to have happened. As it is often enough just to publish an apology or erratum.
