Ffs, bloody compensation culture...

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 07:33

...............yes there are a number of potential issues here

compnesation culture could be one of them

Hmm - from my understanding of the story, the prospective employer was more concerned about her staff showing their hair off! It was nothing to do with racism - it's just that that particular job required her to have her hair on display.

I work in an optician's and also wear glasses myself. I don't think it's unreasonable that if I'm working in an optician's for a certain amount of time then I wear specs from that store! When you work in an industry like that you are a walking advert for them, much more so than if you work in, say, Tescos or wherever.

But for the salon owner to not explain this fully to the lady then i think that was being a bit underhand. And 4k is far too much IMO!

edam · 18/06/2008 08:13

Oh fgs, I heard about this earlier on and thought the complainant was barking. Injury to feelings, FFS. And where is the £4k coming from?

theSuburbanDryad · 18/06/2008 08:13

The interview was fifteen minutes long! I didn't realise this (read the same story in the Times yesterday!) and definitely think that £4k is too much!

Of course it's a real case of "She said", "No, I said" isn't it? Other than Miss Noah's word we don't have any proof that the salon owner was shocked to see her in a headscarf, or that she said she would be uncomfortable to have her around. It does seem like an odd thing to say.

I think that if those things happened, then Ms Noah might be entitled to an apology for her hurt feelings. But £4k - for 15 minutes' work! Not bad, eh?

Is she studying hair and beauty at college or something? Or was she hoping for a training position? Because if she's a qualified stylist then surely someone would have mentioned that the headscarf could be an issue before!!

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 08:17

i am hurt whenever i dont get a job and i do try to apply for ones that seem suited to my lifestyle and personal abilities

i am inclined to rule myself out of aareas where i would be an unlikely candidate

but maybe as an older person i should start targetting places where young people work like trendy nightclubs and stores and get them on age discrimination

Oh for chrissake! This kind of think really, really annoys me. Some people have real problems, you know. I just want to shake people like that and tell them to get a grip! Jeez, I wish all I had to worry about were a headscarf and 15 minutes of hurt feelings.

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 08:24

the salon owner seems quite non plussed by this

i think there are sometimes reasons why yopu dont get jobs

sometimes you just arent going to be the right person

I get hurt feelings every time I go to the hairdressers and they say "my you do have a lot of grey don't you?"

Perhaps I have missed an opportunity here under age discimination legislation and I should consider legal action.

hairdressers wouldn't particularly bother me - it's hardly as if she would have cut her own hair in any case! I do think it was a bit of an oppurtunity to make a quick buck by sueing though.

Interesting about the opticians analogy though. I do like opticians who wear glasses though, I usually go on my own, and I think somebody who wears glasses themselves is far more likely to be helpful to me choosing. Plus I finally got the hang of contacts when an optician who wore them herself showed me how to use them.

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 08:47

i have been put off in hairdressers when they all seem to have awful dye jobs

SSSandy2 · 18/06/2008 08:49

I always judge a new hairdresser partly on how their own hair looks so I think the salon owner has a point.

theSuburbanDryad · 18/06/2008 08:51

Chops - our optician is the only one who doesn't wear glasses!

oggsfrog · 18/06/2008 09:25
Spidermama · 18/06/2008 09:27

Oh I can't believe this! This sort of story does no-one any favours.

Twelvelegs · 18/06/2008 09:31

The salon should have just said they didn't want her because she was 'ugly' 'stupid' etc , this would have caused less fuss.
Gosh aren't we precious about fucking headscarves. Part iof being a hairdresser is showing hair, this girl wouldn't get a job in a lap dancing club either.... not racist just not complying with uniform.

Twelvelegs · 18/06/2008 09:32

OOOPPPs, I mean that if you want to protect your religious views don't do a job that requires you to remove the headscarf.

Twelvelegs · 18/06/2008 09:33

Riven , let us know how you get on.... I'm visably pregnant and so I'm going for a wrestling job I could really use a few grand!!

ChopsTheDuck · 18/06/2008 10:09

did anyone read about the sikh guy? [p[http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1026597/Police-force-blows-100-000-failed-search-helmet-c over-Sikh-officers-turban.html here]] I can empathise with his desire to wear the turban, etc. but the fact that he is now off wityh stress seems rather unecessary!

ChopsTheDuck · 18/06/2008 10:10

sorry

zippitippitoes · 18/06/2008 10:13

personal trainers who have weight issues might be another case

interestingly molly parkin is ion the news for being a dj

tho i think she is also a celebrity so that rather outwieghs the fact she is 74
