This is the first time in ages I've felt excited and hopeful about our politics. Will he be blocked by Starmer's allies?

I've worked with Burnham for a few years. He isn't a chauvinist. He might have swallowed the cool aid but he was very respectful and listened well to his female staff (like me). Which is more than could be said for many other politicians Ive worked with.

Exactly. People throwing words around like misogynist need to remember he has a good reputation with female staff and colleagues. Be careful what you read on social media.

Reform called Trump out as wrong very early on .

😂

He studied at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, and subsequently worked as a researcher for Tessa Jowell, as a parliamentary officer for the NHS Confederation and as an administrator with the Football Task Force. From 1998 to 2001, he was a special advisor to Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Chris Smith. At the 2001 general election, Burnham was elected to the House of Commons as Member of Parliament (MP) for Leigh in Greater Manchester.
Burnham served as a Parliamentary Private Secretary from 2003 to 2005. He was promoted by Prime Minister Tony Blair to serve in his government after the 2005 election as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department. In 2006, Burnham was reshuffled to become Minister of State for Health.

Zero life experience.

FGS. Is he just another joke who for some reason has remarkable self-belief?

GlobalTravellerbutespeciallyBognor · 25/01/2026 12:09

Burnham blocked owing to ‘fears over the cost of the Mayoral election ’

Bougainsillier · 25/01/2026 12:12

Well he isn’t now. How corrupt

titchy · 25/01/2026 12:15

needastrongoneagain · 25/01/2026 12:16

He’s just been blocked from standing, which I fear may massively backfire long term. It may be viewed as Starmer being scared of the competition, only to find the competition arises in other areas of the party anyway (Streeting, Raynor etc). But it’ll look weak I think of Starmer regardless and not stop the speculation.

If you think that TWAW, you're a misogynist, that's just the way it goes.

Heyhelga · 25/01/2026 12:24

Yep they've only gone and done it and blocked Burnham. It's only going to feed the narrative that this an authoritarian government in the wake of delaying some of the local elections.

MangaKanga · 25/01/2026 12:26

As if that craven prick Starmer was ever going to do anything else..

Handeyethingyowl · 25/01/2026 12:28

Well what a surprise

Lightingfail · 25/01/2026 12:30

I admire AB for his work on the blood transfusion scandal. I think blocking him was not a good move and will cause more upheaval in the long run. I'm concerned that Labour will not be re-elected with KS at the helm, but I suspect in many constituencies people will vote strategically to keep Reform out.

Starmer has always been terrified of Burnham - look at the debacle ahead of the Labour party conference this year.

That’ll backfire

BoxingHare · 25/01/2026 12:55

I'm selfishly glad he's been blocked. Maybe he knew he would be and wanted it in the public domain. I think he's been great for Manchester so didn't want him to stop being mayor.

It will backfire eventually because all this shows, rightly or wrongly, is that Starmer seems fearful of losing to Burnham. He will one day, but glad it's not today.

Maybe in your head, but you are not the final word on everything.

Damn. I thought I was! 🤣 Doesn't make me wrong though.

wanted2BThalia · 25/01/2026 14:20

The National Executive of the Labour Party blocked him from standing this morning !!!

Maybe she out earns him anyway and says go for it.

Signage!

Yes, yes it does. Anyone who says that TWAW is supporting a male rights movement and is therefore a misogynist.

Don't be so bloody rude.

LizzieSiddal · 25/01/2026 15:08

I’m glad they blocked him. He should have stood at the General Election if he wanted to be an MP.
Leaving his job as Mayor half way though, is something he said he’d never do, so why now?
Also, I’m from Manchester and have lived down south for half my life, I can assure you that many southerners are not ready for someone who speaks like me or AB, to be PM. There’s a huge amount of prejudice agaist people from the north in my experience.

So you can call me a misogynist for supporting Andy Burnham and when I defend myself, you report me for being rude. Ok…
