STV is a sort of voting system. NOT a form of democracy.

1dilemma · 03/05/2008 01:24

Boris isn't responsible for the Olympics
there are lots of people being paid huge sums to f%$k that one up

slippergirl · 03/05/2008 01:37

The only things that Boris has a proven track record on are lying and racism. It astounds me that anyone is stupid enough to think that Boris who has never demonstrated any capability or understanding / empathy outside of his narrow overprivileged White Upper Middle Class world is capable of managing the complexities of a multicultural city with significant pockets of severe social deprivation. Lets see just how often he ventures into Woolwich / Plumstead / Hackney / Tottenham / Stockwell and just what happens. I knew that this would be the result and it depresses me that people could be so stupid.

1dilemma · 03/05/2008 01:46

Ken hardly hangs around the streets of Stockwell does he? I've certainly never seen him there. Travels through all those places in his cab I bet.

slipper girl have you read his wikipedia entry? who knows what the truth is but it makes interesting reading.
(and has been updated allready)

I'm actually really scared that the tories will get in at the next general election after this.

I seriously thought that Ken would pull it out of the bag because people wouldn't want Boris. I've met a lot of people who put on on the Boris-type persona (at Oxford) and while I'm sure they were all very clever I wouldn't want them handling the multicultural (and in that I include multiple income layers) and highly sensitive mix that is London.

What a fucking balls up the 10p tax rate was all round...

mourningpaper · 03/05/2008 07:05

If anyone mentions this to me today I am going to burst into tears

YOU TOSSERS

YOU BLOODY IDIOTS

Skimty · 03/05/2008 07:07

I've just seen that the BNP have won a seat in the London Assembly as well.

I am clearly completely out of sync with the general population.

FairyMum · 03/05/2008 07:09

BNP in the London Assembly. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN? HOW DID SO MANY PEOPLE VOTE FOR THE BNP FOR GOD'S SAKE?

mourningpaper · 03/05/2008 07:17

(BNP is not TOO bad actually; they WERE aiming for 2 or 3 seats.)

FairyMum · 03/05/2008 07:22

My last leaflet through the door from the BNP was about muslims breeding like rabbits and about to take over the country/world. And people actually vote for these people? I find it scary that I live in the same city as these people. Makes me shudder eventhough I have got the heating on.

I guarantee if we bump this thread in one year's time that everyone who voted Boris will be sorry they did.

And the rest of us are already sorry they did.

FairyMum · 03/05/2008 07:30

from the Daily Mail:

"And in a speech that will doubtless become a landmark in the future of the capital, he hallmarked the way his rule is likely to continue: "Let's get cracking tomorrow," he said. "And let's have a drink tonight."

foofi · 03/05/2008 07:31

What's wrong with that?

purits · 03/05/2008 07:40

The politics of MN have always bemused me. I don?t agree with the prevailing opinion (principally Left). Most of the people I know in RL are Centre / Right. I was almost persuaded that it must be because I know a small, misrepresentative sample. However, it looks like it is MN who are the small, misrepresentative (but very vocal) minority.
I need to get back to RL.

varicoseveined · 03/05/2008 07:41

I live in one of the most multicultural boroughs in London, if not the country, yet the BNP got about 2000 votes.

For those aghast at Boris' win, who was the better alternative? I haven't seen my part of London get better, but get worse... teenage shootings, stabbings, muggings, general deprivation and neglect of the area...

Oh well, the borough is still Labour controlled despite all this

FairyMum · 03/05/2008 07:47

I would be interested in WHY exactly people voted for Boris. What policies does he have? What plans for London? Have been following various threads on MN and the only reason I can see why people vote Boris is to get rid of ken and give someone else a chance. Well, you need to know WHO you are giving a chance? I am genuinly interested in finding a Boris-voter with an actual reason to vote for him, ie. a proper policy!

varicoseveined · 03/05/2008 07:50

fairymum,

Probably cos none of the others are viable?

Many people I know (me included) wanted anyone but Ken but not Paddick nor the BNP or anyone else.

noddyholder · 03/05/2008 07:50

The best everyone can hope for is that he surprises the doubters and if given a chance his much admired intellect finally kicks in in his public life and he actually achieves something

EffiePerine · 03/05/2008 07:53

Fairymum: luckily, most people don't make up their minds based on MN

the coverage here has not exactly been balanced and has actually made me Rather Cross.

I will be watching developments in London with interest

FairyMum · 03/05/2008 07:57

Yes, but can really vote for someone just because you want anyone but Ken? Could you enlighten me on how Boris will make things better for you personally or for London?

EffiePerine, perhaps you could try to make it more balanced then? I just haven't seen any good arguments for boris. I assumed because there aren't any....That's not the same as coverage not being balanced. Anyone want to change my mind?

EffiePerine · 03/05/2008 07:59

well the reactions of many here made me wish I'd put him as first choice rather than second...

I wish there had been a better Tory candidate, but the majority of Londoners wanted Ken to lose for a reason. And calling them idiots only reflects badly on those doing the name-calling.

noddyholder · 03/05/2008 08:01

Boris is academically gifted apparently and so if he has hidden this in his buffoon image then there is much to discover. He is a toff so will be well connected and get certain things done I suppose He seems to speak his mind which if he can think before he opens his mouth is a good thing.Ken was a sleaze who loved London nothing more I personally would not have voted for boris but a majority did so being sick of labour has caused this.Everyone deserves a chance This whole country couldn't be in a worse state
