Is Labour now finished as a united party ?

The cracks in Labour have been getting wider by the day.
George Galloway has won the Rochdale by-election, so is this a sign of more splits to come?
Mr Galloway says he has 60 Candidates ready to stand in the forthcoming General Election.
Can his Workers Party of Great Britain steal enough votes off Labour to give them a real headache?
Or is George deluding himself?

Labour didn't have an endorsed candidate for this by-election in the end and so didn't campaign in it - which was all a bit of a debacle and should have been dealt with better, but it's absolutely typical Galloway bullshit to claim victory over a party that didn't actually compete.

This. Labour voters stayed at home. It’s a shame they didn’t turn out in force and vote Raving Monster Loony Party.

I don't know what Labour stands for, either, but I also think GG is a bit of a nut job. I have no time at all for the conservatives and I'd cut my own throat before I vote reform party. It's a conundrum!

Easy, just look at some new Tory policies. Hunt’s allegedly stealing their non dom tax policy to fund pre election bribes - sorry tax cuts.

AyeupDuck · 01/03/2024 09:44

@nfkl You just wrote what I was thinking. I always end up arguing with Labour canvassers on my doorstep. The last candidates for where I live are a joke a London based barrister, at least have someone local. Loads of people round here are ex mining, that went down badly.

Keir must be involved in candidate selection. They could have had the sensible Paul Waugh and they chose a loathsome antisemite then an even worse one won. The Labour Party needs to own some of this shitty outcome.

I’ve never been a fan of George Galloway but I think he made a good point last night when he said Sunak and Starmer were 2 cheeks of the same backside and they’ve been well and truly spanked tonight.

Galloway and Tice are two cheeks of the same backside. Both play on stirring up division and hate.

George Galloway will always be a cat to me 😹 This was a protest vote in support of the people of Gaza. It won't translate into the GE.

Calling Sunak and Starter two cheeks of the same backside was hilarious though!

He isn't. You can see the candidate selection procedures for each of the two main parties here and you can see that for Labour it's basically down to local members: https://www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/general-election-candidate-selection

The only selection at the national level is for longlisting, which is background checks, DBS, social media scan etc. It's pretty easy to get past.

The Conservative process has much more oversight from CCHQ, which makes it all the more incredible that candidates like Helen Harrison get chosen.

How do the Conservatives and Labour choose who will stand for them in elections?

You think? Pathetic and appealing to the lowest common denominator sums it up for me.

Did you mean to be so rude?

No. GG will be back on the Z celeb circuit the week after the next election.

The constituency party should own some of it for their choice of candidate (to be fair, I expect individual members are pretty devastated by this all turned out) and probably everyone in politics needs to accept that a new level of background check and media training are needed for all potential candidates in a social media age. It's quite a stretch to blame Keir Starmer directly and personally, though.

That’s a very fair summary.
