"Instead, the measure involves giving employers the right to take race or sex into consideration when choosing between candidates with exactly the same qualifications."

Surely this just means that women with children/of child-bearing age will be even less likely to get work?

I disagree with all forms of discrimination. A job should be given to the person best equipped to do it.

Desiderata · 17/03/2008 09:47

Oddly, an article in the Telegraph several weeks ago maintained that 85% of all new jobs created since 1997 had gone to foreign workers. If this is the case, it looks like a non-story to begin with ..

theUrbanDryegg · 17/03/2008 09:48

you feel strongly about it then tmmj??

tissy · 17/03/2008 09:48

do you think it's a bad idea, by any chance, tmmj?

Callisto · 17/03/2008 09:49
Grin
Peachy · 17/03/2008 09:49

There are a very few jobs where certain aspects of a person are important to the job- I am thining a black person in a job working with black kids, or a woman in a job like the one I used to hold working with struggling mothers- but these are very, very few and far between and beyond that no, I don't think there's a case for this at all- kids need to be taught to value themselves for whom they are, it's no better to al;ienate white kids than black or asian kids. We're all human and it's going to take years but its the acceptance of that we should be working towards, not short term quotas.

themildmanneredbunny · 17/03/2008 09:50

oh shit
the computer keeps going bonkers! i logged on and had 40 google windoews open in one go!

Mercy · 17/03/2008 09:50

lol!

I wondered how so many people had responded so quickly!

LedodgyCheapEasterEggsAreASin · 17/03/2008 09:50

Is it hideous MMJ?
I think it will do the opposite of what it's trying to do and will cause things to be much more devisive. All those ignoramas' racists who use the line 'They're taking our jobs' will use this to their advantage.

JingleyJen · 17/03/2008 09:54

PMSL.... I turned my back and 94 responses...
MMJ I have to say I agree with you but perhaps not that strongly

I think its a good idea. We need more diversity. I think certainly in my profession white men dominate and tend to employ other white men simialar to themselves. They often have a huge informal network consisting of likeminded white men. You are kidding yourself if you think who get's the job is always based on merit.

DontCallMeBunny · 17/03/2008 10:01

Peachy, I think certain of those sort of jobs have always been exempt - eg you are allowed to advertise for women only when the job is say, working in a women's shelter.

I think Callisto has a very good point, this is setting out to benefit disadvantaged groups (and the most disadvantaged group in the workplace is mothers with young children, remember) but will almost certainly backfire and disadvantage those groups further.

Peachy · 17/03/2008 10:03

Yes they are- but thats all that should be exempt imo. Otherwise it's just ecouraging racism / sexism / pick your bias in a more subtle means.

TheDevilEatsNestle · 17/03/2008 10:03

The mildmanneredbunny, I take it you have nothing to say on this matter?

TheDevilEatsNestle · 17/03/2008 10:08

Plenty of job adverts already say 'we particularly encourage applications from ethnis minorities or the physically disabled' or tereabouts.
Surely this is just the same thing, hence not news.

It is irritating that a lot of companies have a quota to fill to ensure that they meet equal opportunities targets. And that you have to fill out the equal opportunities questions on application forms. Surely equal opportunities would be not asking any such questions and judging applications on their merits?

Desiderata · 17/03/2008 10:21

That applies to all races and cultures, Fairy. It's the classic 'birds of a feather' syndrome.
