Campi Flegrei volcanic basin in Italy and recent earthquakes

Anyone hearing about this in mainstream news? Pompeii is on my bucket list. I'm not sure I'd be rushing over there this week given the chance. I had no idea they was having notable earthquakes but I did know the land has been rising for years now.

I thought Forbes was a good source however this isn't the best article or entirely 100% accurate

Oh yes.

It's not a question of if but when. It could still be years, but when vulcanologists start twitching I'm inclined to sit up and start listening.

I won't be planning a trip to Naples for the foreseeable. Plenty of other places in the world anyway.

Place marking as I'm supposed to be going next week

I think the chances are you'll probably be ok next week. I think we will have a few more warnings before it goes boom. But I really don't fancy going myself.

No one ever knows when these things will go so I wouldn't be too worried. But the earthquakes look to have quite some damage. I wonder if that's going to be a issue?

Where abouts are you going? I really really really want to see Pompeii.

@IncessantNameChanger I'm going to Sorrento for two weeks. I was looking forward to it!

IncessantNameChanger · 04/10/2023 23:12

Sorrento sounds amazing. Are you following the earthquakes? Thats what would worry me I think, however they pretty minor in the scale of things, but it generating some damage.

If it blows once every x hundred years and goes boom every so many thousand years you'd have more chance of winning the lottery.

From what I have read today they need a combination of earthquake, cracks in the right place and pressure in the right spot.

So unless there is a pressure point and cracks there, that's not good. Very interesting time for volcanologists as they are watching it do a pretty standard cycle of activity.

It looking more possible to wake up in the next hundred years. Obviously less fascinating if you live in Naples I guess.

I am following the earthquake news. Unfortunately I do suffer from anxiety so this is definitely not helping. We are not going to make a decision just yet. Our insurance will not cover us unless the government advise people not to go so we are unsure what decision we will make

IncessantNameChanger · 05/10/2023 13:18

It's really hard when the gov hasn't issued something saying don't go. The earthquake damage isn't bringing down buildings. But I'm not sure I'd want to be around falling rubble either.

I wouldn't book Naples for this week, but if was you, I'd still go. I just if I had the gift of hindsight choose this week iyswim?

I so won't to go, it will be amazing. You will be fine but I understand your worry, I think it's a valid worry.

I think they have a evacuation plan as well. So if you see any smoke we have the knowledge to stay and pray unlike the poor people of pompeii. They stayed for over 24 hours didn't they while it grumbled away. Don't do that. You will be fine. You'd think the buildings are built to withstand earthquakes there.

We are going to have to make a decision over the next couple of days. I will let you now what we decide and pray for all the people that live there that this all ends up okay

I'd go to Pompeii. Might be now or never.
