MOD have announced

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 29/02/2008 14:34

Oh, c'mon, Pennies! Harry does whatever the hell he wants. He didn't go to Iraq because the press found out and he didn't want to put his mates at further risk. That's why he came home.

This isn't the 1950s and he seems very much his mother's child.

Pennies · 29/02/2008 14:39

I think the cogs of royal PR are way more sophisticated than you're giving them credit for. I also think the royals are still governed by a profound sense of duty to the monarchy as a whole. Ok maybe not to a 1950's sense but I still reckon it's a priority for them.

mrsruffallo · 29/02/2008 14:44

Well he has served 10 weeks out of 14 so I don't see how timing is an issue.
The leak was on a US website in January but it didn't catch on until recently so I don't think
your theory stands up Pennies.
LOL- I am not even a big Royal fan but somehow find I have a soft spot for Harry !!! OMG!!!

OracleInaCoracle · 29/02/2008 14:46

but, not so long ago they were adamant that he wasnt going out there here and here

he hasnt been particularly brave(by that i mean no more so than all the other soldiers) but he has manned up and done his job.

OracleInaCoracle · 29/02/2008 14:48

me too mrsruffalo

Pennies · 29/02/2008 14:51

Why not? If the leak was weeks ago then why didn't they pull him out then if his presence there was so dangerous for all concerned.

Don't tell me they didn't know about the leak - they were on the lookout for for it 24/7.

I'm not usually this questioning but for me this doesn't seem to add up.

FAQ · 29/02/2008 14:51

If Harry was one to "tow the line" - he wouldn't have had stuff in the press about him getting p*ssed in the papers - as he'd have made damn sure it didn't happen.......

expatinscotland · 29/02/2008 14:52

He also smokes cigarettes and doesn't seem to give a damn if he's photographed doing so.

Pennies · 29/02/2008 14:57

OK so he says it you don't let me go I'll leave the army. Army bosses (who are having a nightmare recruiting at the mo) think "oh shite this isn't going to do us any favours if he hops it - and by us not letting him go it's going to make people think it's actually really horrible and dangerous out there (because it is) and no-one's going to want to sign up"

So, a compromise is reached and off he goes for a little bit and everyone's happy.

  1. Being out in Afghanistan is made to look a bit more glam and sexy than it really is (and lets face it there's more than a few of us who have gone a bit weak just looking at those forearms);

  2. Prince Harry gets to do a bit of what he really wants to do (and I think that's great and I don't have a problem with him in all of this) and;

  3. the royals come up smelling of roses because a) they let him go, and b) they're protecting him.

ButterflyBessie · 29/02/2008 15:56

Oh FFS Pennies, the Royals don't come out of this 'smelling of roses', Harry comes out of this having earned the respect of many, the royals as a brand don't change

A small part of the media comes out of this smelling like the dung they are and Harry once again has to stop doing a job he loves for the sake of his friends and comrades

I wouldn't blame him if he comes home and goes on a right royal bender, what the fuck else can he do? Everything he does do is criticised or curtailed, poor fucking sod doesn't stand a chance

OracleInaCoracle · 29/02/2008 18:42

here here butterflybessie

nutcracker · 29/02/2008 18:48

I feel sorry for him

mrsruffallo · 29/02/2008 19:23

Agree bb

scaryteacher · 29/02/2008 19:25

But why would the Army go along with the royal PR machine? They've got far more important things to think about like not having any troops left; so God knows what they'll do when Kosovo kicks off again.

Good on Harry for going and hopefully garnering some support for the rest of the troops out there. It's a shame he has to come back, but if his oppos were endangered it is the best thing, although I can imagine he'll be royally pissed off.

cheshirekitty · 29/02/2008 19:31

Just hope the sleazebag journo who first published this story is really proud of him/herself.

Nice to put all those young men/women at even more risk.

mrsruffallo · 29/02/2008 20:15

ck, must be quite unethical even in hack world

3andnomore · 29/02/2008 20:29

Pennies, I doubt, that they would have put his fellow serving man at bigger risk than they already are in a warzone, just so they can score a few points and then stage this....

Oh the shame I had to live through today, when dear hubby told me,majorly disgusted with the whole situation, that it was a german journalist that revealed where the troops are, etc....

Pennies · 29/02/2008 22:29

OK you all clearly think I'm off my rocker but I've canvassed my views with some RL mates who reckon there's something in what I'm saying. Perhaps I'm just a bit rubbish at articulating it in writing.

In response to the question about why they'd risk other soldiers' lives - well they're just cannon fodder aren't they.

Pennies · 29/02/2008 22:35

The Army would go along with royal PR because they've got PR out of it too - they've got Harry looking buff fighting the meanies in conditions that even a royal

PeachesMcLean · 29/02/2008 22:40

Pennies, very interesting about the "powers that be". Don't imagine that is just the Royal Family. That's the media as well, they would have been complicite in the silence. They need the Royal Family's staff to be on their side, and vice versa. Much as they like to pretend their independence, each side depends on the other.

Pennies · 29/02/2008 22:45

Hence the priviledged interviews and photo shoots - they haven't lost out over this at all either.

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:52

"But why would the Army go along with the royal PR machine? They've got far more important things to think about like not having any troops left"

Because what better way to recruit more troops. obv. Isn't that just so obvious?

pointydog · 29/02/2008 22:53

Pennies, you are not off the wall at all. The fact you thought you might be has made me smile

Pennies · 29/02/2008 22:55

At last!!!!! Someone sees my view!

aintnomountainhighenough · 29/02/2008 23:01

I am quite surprised by some of the postings on here. God how absolutely awful it must be to not be able to have a 'normal' life and have to take bodyguards with you to kick a football around. Nevermind those hundreds of children who can't go to the park for fear of being knifed. Don't know where the next meal is coming from and can't get a decent education let alone stamp their feet and say 'but I want to go to Afganistan Daddy'.

Both William and Harry have unbelievably privileged lives. Isn't it interesting that the second born is always a little bit wayward, just think about Princess Margaret. The second born has all the stuff without the responsilibity. Now the thing that would be really good news would be the DNA test.......
