Long time reader but not poster.

I am of the opinion that if you see something online you don't like, don't read it or click on it, scroll on. Personal attacks on those with differing views are not necessary and only portray the poster in a bad light.

This article today makes the point that online "armchair investigators" may actually be able to help.

The vast majority on Mumsnet who discussed the case were fine in my view (for example, looking at images of the river and wondering if it was fast flowing enough, or asking where cameras were situated..that kind of normal stuff)

See, I already felt this was going too far. Because this easily merged into speculation (“it wasn’t too fast, therefore …”, “there was no camera at so and so road, therefore ….”)

But how is it different the papers vs public speculation

We are all armchair investigators aren't we of a sort ? We hear something and debate it with friends family and then decide for ourselves particularly when the police have fudged an investigation up.
Everyone I have spoken to has a different theory about what happened to Nicola and this is because the police were unclear from the start, did not give correct information, did not search areas until after the public did, did not stop vigilantes and nip this in the bud.
They did a disservice to Nicola's family and to all of us who genuinely cared and hoped for a good end to all of this;
I do believe everyone who posted in here on the threads regarding Nicola posted in good faith because
we all wanted a better outcome than this.
Lessons will have been learned.
I hope they stick and God forbid - next time something like this happens the police will have smartened up their act. They even implied they found the body when it was clearly two people walking their dog. Come on.

No we are not (all armchair investigators).

There was nothing wrong with the police investigation. There was plenty wrong with people like you speculating, gossiping, guessing. The disservice done to Nicola and her family was done by people like you, not by the police

You weren't owed more, or different, information. It was literally nothing to do with you and your post shows you haven't learnt one single, solitary thing - you are still whining, justifying and blame-shifting.

So basically could it be debated that the merits of why involve the public to begin with, why not have a complete media silence ?

Hawkins003 · 21/02/2023 08:47

Then it prevents any speculation about x,

Shesasuperfreak · 21/02/2023 08:49

Wasn't she found by a member of the public though?

It seems public speculation was helpful in this instance.

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 21/02/2023 08:54

@Untitledsquatboulder
Oh get off your high horse taking the moral high ground. The public were informed and so of course we all took a natural concerned interest in this awful situation. When it came on the news last night that it was in fact Nicola that they found I cried. My heart goes out to her family as should yours. I did no disservice to Nicola or to her family by pointing out the incompetence of the police in this matter. Had it been handled properly from the start, it would not have turned into the circus it did and by making a single post on an internet forum I take offence at the nature of your off hand nasty remarks.

Yes absolutely, and the police even tried to take the credit for that. Shameful.
