A 22-year-old woman from Barrow-in-Furness has been found guilty of perverting the course of justice by lying about being trafficked by an Asian grooming gang and making false rape allegations against a series of white men.

Eleanor Williams, known as Ellie, sparked a worldwide solidarity movement when she posted graphic photos of herself on Facebook, alleging she had been beaten and raped by men who took her to sex “parties” around the north-west of England.

The post, made during the first Covid lockdown on 20 May 2020, prompted more than 100,000 people to join a Facebook group called Justice for Ellie. It birthed a line of merchandise featuring a purple elephant, her favourite animal, and prompted a crowdfunder, which saw more than 1,000 people donate £22,000 to help her and bring her abusers to justice.

Williams was found unanimously guilty of eight counts of perverting the course of justice. She will be sentenced on 13 and 14 March.

This is so awful. The poor men she accused! They have seen their lives, families and businesses devastated.

What on earth was her motivation??

I wonder if she has a personality disorder, some other mental health issues, and maybe far-right political views (Tommy Robinson was all over this). Substantial custodial, I reckon.

I just read the Guardian post about this! She inflicted all those brutal injuries on herself (including her face and intimate parts) with a hammer. She'd also been making multiple false rape claims since she was 16.

At the end of the day the local MP said she is a victim of something (if not imaginary Asian men) such as mental illness, and needs support. Which I completely agree with! But I feel even sorrier for all the Asian men in the area whose lives she made hell, families she broke up, whose careers she derailed for years, and whom she drove out of the area.

Realistically also think the local MP saying that = a knock-on effect of the "angelic white girl face" which led to her accusations being taken so seriously by the police/system at first, and then (after the police/system had declared the allegations false) the public who continued to believe she was a victim. I can't imagine they would've had the same level of sympathy for a nasty harsh looking toothless woman, or with genders flipped

Personality disorder I would guess, probably a history of abuse or neglect as a child and making the false allegations was a way to gain attention and meet her emotional needs. She likely views other people as a means to an end and lacks empathy. Some people are fundamentally damaged by their life experiences and cause a huge amount of damage to others.

There may be mental health issues, of course, but it's really important to keep crime seperate from mental health.

How awful for those men and their friends and families.

She has to have some sort of mental illness to do that to herself. She self harmed from 13 though. She knew by posting it over lockdown when the majority of us were bored at home she would get a reaction. J Her mum is still making out she's a victim. Her family carried on what she started continuing to lie for her.

I never believed it from the start. Nobody would go through that trauma then post it publicly on social media. It showed up on everyone's news feed in the area. Then I found out who her mother is. A friend of mine worked with her going back before Ellie was born. But she used to lie nick off people and her employer and sleep with contractors. She did this in more than one job. She's only a labour councillor because of her mother.

There's more coming out all the time about what she's done and the affects it's had. I don't know why Jordan was even arested. He was in a police prison van at the time she said it happened because his mate got into a fight. So he was seeing him home. But some are still sure she's telling the truth. This is the sky news interview with her mum.

Mental health issues? Childhood abuse? Personality disorder?

How about she's just a straight up nasty piece of work?

Possibly, but the level of self-inflicted injuries and the lengths to which she went suggest that she is damaged in some way. But she has done a huge amount of damage. People have been driven out of their homes. At least one marriage has been ruined. The far right have got a foothold in Barrow. And there are still people who believe her, despite the very clear evidence that it was all lies.

While all this was going on though she was working 3 jobs doing 80 hour's a week. She would be seen travelling alone on the train. We think to get locations on her phone to say she had been trafficked there. She even said she had a baby boy called Bailey in letters she wrote. But she also had letters she said Mo had sent her. But after analysing the handwriting they said they were wrote by the same person.

Even Maggie Oliver who at first supported her. Said she wished all sexual abuse cases were investigated so thoroughly as Cumbria police investigated her's. Even though she had made false accusations before. Each time she made an accusation arrests were made and they were investigated. So all the resources used that could have been spent on actual victims were wasted.

@Wetblanket78 - "Even Maggie Oliver who at first supported her. Said she wished all sexual abuse cases were investigated so thoroughly as Cumbria police investigated hers" I thought there was something a bit off about that from Oliver, like she was saying the police shouldn't treat a colossal criminal level of justice perversion seriously, but then she (Oliver) lapped up the story and must be feeling pretty foolish.

She did and she's also rejected the £10k donation offered by the man who raised money for Ellie. Still not made a public apology to the men. The racial abuse they put up with was horrendous.

The local WCM which her mother and grandmother have also rejected the £10k donation. But her mother is still making out she's a victim.

@IDontCareMatthew have you seen the self injury pics? not just the face, the one with the hammered naked body and slit breasts and everything. Definitely some mental illness there.

But anyway I don't think that's mutually exclusive with "nasty piece of work". I struggle with mental illness myself and know many others who do. At a severe level, mental illness has an ugly, destructive and selfish side to it.

I always see people say "that's not (mental illness name), that person is just being an asshole" about behaviour which is literally (the most extreme version of) the listed symptoms for diagnosis...

Still a nasty piece....putting people through hell, lying, wasting resources. Vile

The Facebook group from the beginning was odd I remember asking why she was in prison and no answer was given apart from she had broke bail conditions and as someone who works in the women's sector I found it odd if only all VAWG cases were investigated like hers

Yes, I remember her family saying she was only in prison to "keep her safe" and thinking that didn't make any sense at all - why not a refuge in that case?

The testimonies I've read from the falsely accused men have been very dignified. I hope they can rebuild their lives.

Just saw she got 8 years in prison. That's way too long. She needs psychiatric help not to be locked up. This may also put off other victims from coming forward.

I think she needs support. She will be supported through the prison system.

I hope the men and their families, that have had such an ordeal, lives ruined, driven near to suicide, also get some support to rebuild their lives too.

If you listen to the judge she will serve half out on licence. Then she has some taken off think he halved it though. He also halved the charge from when she was 16. So she will serve 2 1/2 years. I don't think it's enough for the devastation she caused.

I live in Barrow and it really did devide our community. But the majority are now saying they regret getting involved and are embarrassed and ashamed of they're behaviour. I kept out of it myself. But two buisnesses were ruined and there was multiple vigilante attacks. Some in the JFE group are still claiming she's inocent. Her family need to come out and make a public apology and put them straight. But no they were hiding from reporters at court.

But she's not really a threat to society and probably just needs some therapy.

But she is though accusing men of rape. Beating herself with a hammer. She has ruined people's lives Even her own stepdad has admitted she falsely accused him on the local news site. He deleted his comment. What about people taking the law into they're own hands?

Her mother sister and brother need to stop covering up for her. That's the first step to helping her.

Of course she's a threat to society. Those men she accused are a part of society you know. Not to mention all the hate she instigated.
