I had never heard about this case. Well worth a read on BBC News. Love the way it's written and puts the victims at it's core

BBC News - Bible John: The forgotten women at the heart of a serial killer mystery

Don’t they believe it to be Peter Tobin ?

MolesOnPoles · 18/12/2022 16:05

The BBC podcast linked to that article was amazing - I’m not usually into true crime, but it was really interesting and sensitive.

Spenn · 18/12/2022 16:06

Jimmy savile was linked to this at one point

kingvizzytarg · 18/12/2022 16:10

Because this is in news, I thought they had cracked it there....

Bible John is Glasgow's most famous serial killer. And that's saying a lot since Brady AND West both also lived here at points.

It's not Peter Tobin, they've already checked this out. Not Jimmy Saville, never ever heard that as a rumour

Moon22 · 18/12/2022 16:15

I was surprised I'd never heard of it tbh! Maybe it wasn't such huge news outside of Scotland?- or I have somehow just missed it.
Going to be following with absolute fascination now.
Just refreshing to see the victims talked about in this way for once.

Was a connection not found between Angus Sinclair of the World's End murders and Bible John? Perhaps I'm misremembering.

MolesOnPoles · 18/12/2022 16:19

Spoiler…..

But the theory of this podcast is that it wasn’t actually a serial killer. The victims were all in the same bar on the nights they were killed, but beyond that there’s not much concrete to link them. It might well be three separate killers

There’s a fairly clear suspect for one of the victims (long dead, not famous), but nothing to suggest he was linked to the other two.

ElizaB22 · 18/12/2022 16:21

Maybe watch these The Hunt for Bible John

bellac11 · 18/12/2022 16:21

There was a good documentary about this on iplayer, might still be there.

Interviewed the husband of one of the victims. Awful for him

What struck me was how women were viewed then though because even when he was talking about her going out that night he put it as 'I had allowed her to go out'.

I think the police said that it might be that there was no link to the crimes apart from the location, also I think the killings were different types?

ElizaB22 · 18/12/2022 16:22

And as someone also mentioned The Hunt for the World's End Killers

There was a lot to link them, all three women were killed the same way. I won’t go into detail.all three had certain items stolen. All three were having their period. All three had their sanitary protection placed rhe same way by the killer.

they think it is possible it is not 1 man, but maybe 1 lady was killed by someone then 18 months later someone else killed the other two ladies

they simply don’t know. But they did catch a petty criminal whose dna showed he was likely related to the killer, but they couldn’t find the person despite a lot of dna testing.

there is also a thought by the police that senior police knew who it was and elected not to take it further, shut it down, for whatever reason,

I thought the link was that he quoted Bible verse at them all?

DashingWhiteSergeant · 22/12/2022 18:56

The writing from the victim’s son was so powerful

Lbnc2021 · 22/12/2022 19:09

My childhood best friends mother was convinced her exhusband was Bible John. He was pulled in for questioning 3 times.

Is he still alive ?
Scary.
The poor victims and their families.

I went to a talk by the lead detective who arrested Peter Tobin, he was very sure there was no link to Bible John.

No he died years ago. But some of the coincidences were almost too good to be true.

I always thought it was a bit of a stretch to believe that there were 3 separate killers. How likely is it that the Barrowlands were a hunting ground for 3 different men in such a short space of time?

LadyEloise1 · 30/12/2022 11:25

@Lbnc2021
Is there a Cold Case unit where the case is being managed ?
If so could you contact them and give that name. The original enquiry may have missed something and with DNA developments etc, your call might help crack the case.

If I recall correctly from the podcast, the Bible John reference was made by the media because the last victim was out with her sister and they shared a cab home with a man who made a quote in a discussion about religion. She was dropped off first then her sister was murdered, the assumption was, by the man in the cab.

The link between the murders was the Barrowland ballroom, the strangulation and most specifically the way their sanitary towels were placed under the body.

purpledalmation · 31/12/2022 23:18

Heard the podcast. Brilliant. Another excellent but tough one, is the boy in the woods.

Catnipcapers · 31/12/2022 23:23

The Boy in the Woods was heartbreaking bug excellent. I felt so conflicted towards hos mother.

StrictlyCandelabra · 31/12/2022 23:24

I listened to that one too. It was heartbreaking. There’s some really good podcasts on bbc sounds at the moment. The Cruelty and The Kidnapping of Stephanie Slater are also well worth a listen.

Catnipcapers · 31/12/2022 23:26

I binged the Kidnapping of Stephanie Slater before Christmas, she was incredible. Sorry to hijack the post!
