I'm so appalled by this I mean the bombings always appall me, because senseless killing is one thing, but using mentally impaired folk to facilitate it is about as low as you can possibly go. Isnt it?

ugh

Vacua · 01/02/2008 23:27

cross with SELF for even looking

bookwormmum · 01/02/2008 23:27

Disgusting, it really is beyond words.

In fact the most of the news made me cry tonight.

hifi · 01/02/2008 23:29

omg its disgusting, lowest of the low. even without using a child of special needs.any child used is outrageous.

Vacua · 01/02/2008 23:36

were they children? thought it said women

not that it makes any difference either way of course

VeniVidiVetoQV · 01/02/2008 23:40

Women, and there was mention of Downs Syndrome.

I've no idea how much this would interfere with their ability to understand consequences. But, I would imagine that they wouldnt have a full understanding, at best.

OP posts:
hifi · 01/02/2008 23:40

i dont think they would have the capacity to make an informed decision.

Has no-one else seen this then?

Appalling.

How can anyone ever justify this? Even the most twisted interpretation of Islam can't condone this, surely?

eidsvold · 02/02/2008 12:15

I saw it and can tell you that the information we have here in Aus was that the bombs were set off by remote rather than the young women being the bombers as such. As down syndrome can have a spectrum of intellectual impairment it is difficult to guess how much they 'understood'.

IN observing dd1 - she really does not have the capacity to be mean in that she may do things through a lack of understanding etc BUT i have never seen a vindictive calculated mean action iyswim.

So I would say that these women had no understanding of what was happening to them or what would happen to people around them. In a desire to please whoever it was - they would have followed directions and would have had the capacity to understand the outcome iyswim.

These young women were simply pawns in the hands of terrorists.

VeniVidiVetoQV · 02/02/2008 12:22

Yes, that's what I'd read - that they'd been detonated remotely

I don't know an awful lot about Downs Syndrome, but figured that if it needed remote detonation, then they couldn't have been that aware of what was happening or what they were doing. But, as I said, I don't know enough about DS to say it 'out loud' iykwim?

It makes me compare it to ethnic cleansing, but in an especially warped manner.

OP posts:
eidsvold · 02/02/2008 12:28

sorry that should read would not have had the capacity to understand.

It really is such a spectrum and we don't know where these young women lay on that spectrum. So it really is hard to guess how much they understood.

Just despicable - what happened to them.

chuzzlewit · 02/02/2008 12:32

I would imagine that the use of remote detonators would indicate that the poor young women did not understand what was going to happen? They were used as human vehicles.

Utterly despicable.

SueBaroo · 02/02/2008 13:01

The people that perpetrated this are without excuse. Utterly, utterly without excuse.

Sushipaws · 02/02/2008 13:25

My dh goes onto a football site much like MN, but it's mostly men talking about football rather than children.

He was reading a thread about this and someone had said -

"Maybe we should send over some of our spazzy's to retaliate."

I was utterly shocked at how many people had laughed and that not one person had called the poster an asshole. If thats the kind of attitude we have towards people with learning difficulty's in this more enlightened society, then no wonder other contries hate us.

slim22 · 02/02/2008 13:33

lost for words

Blu · 02/02/2008 13:45

I did see this on the news last night, and in addition to the horror of what happened, the people killed, the involvement of women with learning disability, I was furious that the BBC called it a 'suicide bomb'. Very very lazy reporting. A bomb strapped to a person is not, per se, a suicide bomb. Suicide is someone taking their own life. These poor women were almost certainly amongst the murdered, not the murderers.

The 'on th spot' reporter called them 'mules'- but the newsdesk reort called them 'suicide bombers'. Insensitive and innacurate.

fordfiesta · 02/02/2008 13:46

sushipaws....
How sad this world is right now.

tiredemma · 02/02/2008 13:49

Shocking- I dont want to read the link, but I did see it briefly on the news this morning. Nobody could justify that. cruel and callous murder.

northernrefugee39 · 02/02/2008 14:35

Oh eugh, unbelieveable.It's truly sickening.

Reallytired · 02/02/2008 20:04

I think the women were murdered. Prehaps the true murderers felt that they were literally killing two birds with one stone. Maybe they see women with learning difficulties as nothing but a burden.

The tragic thing is that these women probably trusted their murderers. More than likely its their own family who volenteered them to be suicide bombers

Blandmum · 02/02/2008 20:21

this estate has cottages to rent at skipness

They also run the seafood cabin.

This is emphatically not the luxury hoiday cottage, but we were right next to the castle, and the view from our window was of the sea and arran in the bay.

Three beaches near the cottage, one all of shells, one sandy and one all of pebbles. Lovely walks in the estate.

Seafood cabin first rate. Tiny shop in the village that will get your shopping in for you when you arrive. Very famous five. Some of the cottage s also have dingies.

Just don't tell anyone else, OK???

Blandmum · 02/02/2008 20:21

Oh dear god, I'm so sorry, wrong thread!

VeniVidiVetoQV · 02/02/2008 21:21

MB

Blu - you are absolutely right. It's mis-reporting isnt it?
