The world's gone mad. Just heard on R5 that Parenting UK has demanded Woolworths remove a bed from their website/catalogue because it's called Lolita.

It's not on the bed, or anywhere, that's just what you type in when you order it.

Mad, or am I being insensitive?

Unbelievable that the woolworths people had to wikipedia it to learn the connotations

SugarSkyHigh · 01/02/2008 20:35

as the mother of 3 dd's i find the whole thing tasteless - and i think it's a Good Thing that woollies change the name/ remove the product. I can't believe smiths continue to sell the playboy stuff, incidentally.

Upsidedownegg · 01/02/2008 20:45

I think it's a weird name to call a bed in the first place. But then I remembered the 'Adolf hotel' in Ulaan Bator, called that (in 1983) because it's a popular Western name...

I'm sure that Woolworths buyers are going to be very careful about the names of future products!

I half heard an interview on Radio 5 about this this morning (was in shower at time, so didn't pick up all that was said) but I did assume for some reason that the punter in question was Cod because I think she started a thread on this topic yesterday. It was some mum who'd been surfing the net and came across this weird item. Lady in question had very plummy/horsey/home-counties voice and I did catch myself thinking "if that is Cod that's not how I thought she'd come across". Then I thought "I should get out more".

workstostaysane · 01/02/2008 21:10

they work at Woolworths BECAUSE they have never heard of Nabakov.

snotty i know, but to name a girl's bed lolita is revolting. if it has no connotations to anyone, why did the super brains in the company not call the bed Frances or Penelope?
Because Lolita is perceived as a sexy name and the idiots are happy/ignorant/immoral enough to want to sexualise young girls in order to make money.

nasty nasty nasty

oldmother · 01/02/2008 22:53

her name was Catherine Hanly that found the bed she was looking for a bed for her 5 year old and came across this bed named Lolita.

very bad taste if you ask me.

i can't help but think someone named it 'lolita' as a kind of an 'in' joke.

Fantastic book, It is pretty well known. However the people at Woolworths head office are a bunch of muppets - my Dh is a national account manager for an FMCG company and he looks after Woolworths, so he has to deal with them all the time.

Peachy · 02/02/2008 18:49

Head office are very possibly a bit dim- mind you most assistants in woolies I know ar students and / or Mums, and rather bright- perhaps they should be reshuffling their staff?!

moondog · 02/02/2008 18:50

lol at entire head office in Woolies dismissed as muppets.

WideWebWitch · 02/02/2008 18:55

Agree it's mad to call a childs bed Lolita. Wtf were they thinking of?

oxocube · 02/02/2008 19:06

Agree with workstostaysane. Sack the marketing research dept

oxocube · 02/02/2008 19:09

My first job was as a Saturday girl at Woolies BTW, first on the make-up counter (Rimmel and Miners!) then on the 'Pick 'n Mix'. Even at 16, I would never have been so thick.

Lolitagirl · 15/05/2008 19:37

i want to point out something, recently there has been alot of hoohar about lolita and the word in general
so please note that recently the Japanese fashion names "Lolita" is becoming rather popular amungst girls and women like myself, im a fan of the fashion range including the trinkets, accessories, and even odd bits of furniture.
so dont always think that the word lolita is refering to the book, believe me, this word will soon be known as mainly the clothing.
if its frilly, cute and victorian-ized its lolita fashion ^^
