Where are the real news??!! Too much about the Queen

grey12 · 18/09/2022 07:49

Ok, I'll start by saying what a shock the passing of the Queen was for everyone. May God grant her eternal peace.

But the UK news are starting to me off 😡 we are completely in the dark about everything else!!!!

You have to scroll and scroll and scroll on news' apps to get anything of substance!! What about the energy crisis? What about inflation? What about Ukraine? What about the new energy measures in the EU? Nothing!!!

Yes, a few segments about the Queen's passing. Yes, a whole dedicated section for her and the new King. But why are we all completely neglecting real news??!!! Half of the country is about to dive into poverty and we don't care?....

Yes to the scrolling …

I mean I’m interested in elements of the royal succession, and the ‘sociology’ of The Queue, and the political and constitutional implications of the counsellors of state etc; but yes I think the country going to the dogs should be higher profile.

bodie1890 · 18/09/2022 07:59

I’m not a Royalist, but come on - it’s not hard to find news about whatever you’re interested in - you have the whole internet at your disposal. Lots of people are interested in this so actually it is news. And it will blow over in a couple more days.

picklemewalnuts · 18/09/2022 08:02

It's all there, still.

Realistically there's no new news on the energy crisis, cost of living crisis etc.

There's news about Ukraine- but it's similar to previous news.

World events don't really keep up with the speed of news availability these days. We have constant updates in case something happens, but most of the time it's just comment on what we've already been told.

News is not new news anymore, it's commentary.

Oblomov22 · 18/09/2022 08:04

Agree. There should be some on the Queen, then other topics. I don't believe any one topic should every dominate totally.

Yes, of course.

But I'm usually busy with other stuff so I tend to rely on BBC app news just so I'm not completely ignorant 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe I should change....

It’s working out very nicely for the Government isn’t it? Ignoring the energy crisis/cost of living/ massive NHS crisis. That’s all being conveniently buried. What’s going to happen after Monday?

DurhamDurham · 18/09/2022 08:17

I agree op. These last few days I've been wondering what would have been on the news if the Queen had not died.
I don't think it would just be commentary, there are news worthy things happening which we're just not finding out about on our rolling news channels like BBC and Sky because of the live streams of the queue and personal accounts of people who maybe met the Queen 20 years ago.

IpanemaChic · 18/09/2022 08:18

I mostly get my news from radio 4 in the morning. They have had Ukraine news and some economic analysis but not enough imo. The pound is at its lowest level since 1985 fgs.

Mydpisgrumpierthanyours · 18/09/2022 08:21

I thought this too. Surely there must be SOMETHING else going on.

SpinCityBlues · 18/09/2022 08:22

I mean, we’re facing f*cking devaluation ffs but apparently it’s more important to ask Dave about his memories of a silver jubilee street party. (No offence, Dave.)

ShandaLear · 18/09/2022 08:22

Bread and circuses, innit? Distract the peasants by getting them to argue whether a grandson should hold hands with his own wife while unpopular and worrying reporting gets suspended or swept under the carpet. If parliament was sitting there’s no doubt they’d have sneaked out half a dozen unpopular laws by now.

NightmareSlashDelightful · 18/09/2022 08:23

I agree, but it’s a very short-term spike. Queen stuff will drop off massively in another 48 hours as there’ll just be nothing to report. And then the scrutiny on the Truss government will properly get underway.

The BBC — or MournHub as it’s being referred to — has gone a bit myopic on it. But then it’s our national/state broadcaster, so what did anyone expect, really?

The Guardian is a bit more balanced. Or try the New York Times for global stuff, their world events coverage is really good.

SpinCityBlues · 18/09/2022 08:23

Re the BBC - what are Laura Kuenssberg and Chris Mason playing at?

LaraLei · 18/09/2022 08:25

They should be reporting how much the funeral will cost.

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2022 08:25

It’s not that hard to find just not as full on as usual

I’ve heard about Ukraine, inflation , cost of living not much has happened since last announcement

It’ll be back on Tuesday

I prefer this level of intensity but find the media too full on generally - and I don’t seek it out really just radio

Anyway there are still reports

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2022 08:27

Inflation is down slightly btw

Yes, I keep saying that!!! 👍

But the problem we're facing very soon is "no bread"!!! 😖

Very hard to find news on the 2 police officers stabbed Leicester Square last week,I've noticed.

lljkk · 18/09/2022 10:21

I get all my British news from BBC. A week ago OP's complaint was valid but there's lots of other news in last 4 days or so.

Another vote for Radio 4. I alway listen to the 7 am news for example.
one major thing last week was that the pound was at its lowest against the dollar for 37 years. 😕

No, it's really not.

Theres been news on the officers, the offender, Ukraine, Inflation, pound dropping, funeral of the little girl that was shot & killed, the impending mini budget next Friday & what it's believed to be, the fuel crisis - the ongoing impact of the price freeze & how to pay for it & that's just off the top of my head.

Same, I have started putting Radio 2 on as at least some music so not constant Royal blah. Though Radio 4 did have a good 20 mins the other day talking about Ukraine. Read an article in FT yesterday about the currency issues. But I am missing proper news.

I've avoided all social media and TV news so haven't even seen a photo of The Queue. I did catch a brief video of some of the Royal Theatrics on Google homepage, but the ridiculous displays of wealth and pompous dress-up wind me up, so I'm intentionally avoiding all of it.

Only a few more days to. Go though, surely after the Funeral there's not much to cover?
