i really think that
a) miudle class liberal hippies are thick

or b)midle class tories like to incite racial fracas where non existed before.

fuzzywuzzy · 23/01/2008 20:38

I'm muslim, I've got winnie the pooh pyjamas, was given them as a gift last year (before anyone thinks I'm completely insane and without taste- but they are cute dammit).

I do know of some muslim's who find the pig the actual animal really yuck, but most of them have grown up in India and see wild pigs rooting around and making a nuisance of themselves, they bite you know the pigs in India, and charge at you.......!!!!!

And MP very good point, the grand old british culture of the three little pigs is safe and sound they've not been banned, they just didnt win a poxy prize nobody has heard of until now.

Let this be a lesson to everyone who has poxy little unknown prizes to give away, books/newspapers to sell, stick in them mozlems in a bafd light and hey presto.........

redadmiral · 23/01/2008 21:09

I wouldn't care if they banned all the pig fairy tales - think I find them a bit yuck myself!

BIL's family came from Pakistan when he was small, which ties in with what you're saying.

Peachy · 23/01/2008 21:48

LOL- British wild pigs aren't that friendly either you know! Signs all over the Forest of Dean warning poelpe about them!

My ds1 is obsessed in an ASD way with pigs, so I am not eprsonally keen but for very different reasons- purely sick of them!

Pan · 23/01/2008 22:28

It's pc gone mad.

Peachy · 23/01/2008 22:30

LOL Pan!

cushioncover · 23/01/2008 23:45

FFS, its like that passport story where the child was deemed to be showing flesh and it was thought Muslims would be offended so she wasn't allowed to go on hols.
MCoB laughed and said nobody gets offended at the bare shoulders of an 18mth old.
Mad mad mad!

littleducks · 24/01/2008 09:33

this made the wright stuff this morning!
but it does seem that a very small section of the community would be offended, it is only cowboy builders who are portrayed as pigs in the story, so therefore only Muslim cowboy builders could complain surely (or possibly Jewish cowboy builders).

Peachy · 24/01/2008 10:16

Or Jewish! remeber the Jewish Kosha laws!

And then maybe only a tiny percentage of those faith dominated cowboys who chose to take the OT nd Qur'an beyond its original meaning

So what, 3 pewople and an overly PC aware Councillor looking for a re-election seat?

It's a non-issue. There are so many wrongs being doe to the Islamic communities at the moment, and I suppose a small few being done by (in terms of number / genuine prevalence rather than Daily Mail coverage obviously) that frankly I suspect your average follower of the food laws (faith irrrespective) will have far more to owrry about!

(Disclaimer: I sat through a brilliant 3 hour lecture on inter faithr elations yesterday by a wonderful catholic teacher who made us promise to carry our knowledge into RL, so am feeling more energentic in my fervour than usual!)

NotQuiteCockney · 24/01/2008 10:21

From what I know, many Muslims see pigs much the same as we cockroaches, for example. They're filthy and gross, and not appropriate for a children's story. It's not a big deal, it's just a cultural difference.

FranSanDisco · 24/01/2008 10:24

A couple of years ago I was on a childcare/development course and had to give a presentation on a book to the class. I chose a book call the Buy Spider and it has lots of farm yard animals in it. I had wooden figures for each animal and asked fellow student to hold them. None of the muslim students would take the wooden pig and the one jewish woman in the class also refused to touch the figure My tutor who was jewish was frankly amazed by this over-reaction.

redadmiral · 24/01/2008 10:25

LOL at the thought of giving nieces a cockroach mobile....

I do feel bad though, as I think he left it up there as long as he could bear to so as not to offend...

Peachy · 24/01/2008 10:30

But thats a cultural reaction, not a religious one- there's a difference.

I come from a distinct W/C class culture with many slightly odd behaviours despite it being English and broadly Christian, but people wouldn't expect aspects of that (my mouthiness for a start) to be used as a judgement of Christianity becuase that wouldn't be appropriate.

Yet so many cultural onrms are used as judgements of the less familair faiths and that needs addressing.

Kimi · 24/01/2008 10:39

/kimi sits on hands.....

cushioncover · 24/01/2008 10:54

Surely the issue here though is people getting their knickers in a twist over what they have decided that others may find offensive.

If actual Muslims protested then that's one thing. It still, IMO, should not be removed but I'd understand the fuss. It's just that this is not that at all.

cushioncover · 24/01/2008 10:56

IMHO, we cannot routinely remove material that others find offensive as that is censorship.

I'm offended by the BNP but I'd march alongside them to protect their right to be here.
