Do you agree with him. If Putin was a woman he wouldn't have invaded Ukraine?
I think it smacks of gender stereotyping.

He's right. Not since Boudicca has a woman started a war.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 02/07/2022 15:17

Stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. Fact: women don't start wars.

LadyCatStark · 02/07/2022 15:17

No he wouldn’t. Women don’t start wars.

Notanotherusernamenow · 02/07/2022 15:18

Thatcher started a war with Argentina

Metabigot · 02/07/2022 15:19

Are these real, cunty women or the 'identify as' women that he's on about here?

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 02/07/2022 15:20

Thatcher started a war with Argentina

No she didn't.
Argentina invaded British soil.

Neither sex has a monopoly on evil or aggression. (Looking at you, ex-SIL 🤣.)

The nature of dominant male aggression in Russian government sounds like a thesis in the making, not a topic for a throw-away comment on Twitter. Boris as usual being a jerk.

And women leaders HAVE started and sponsored wars, although less like in a democracy where women with strong aggressive tendencies are seen as unnatural and not voted into power in the first place.

myplace · 02/07/2022 15:21

I can't argue with him about some stuff. Sadly.

MrsOwainGlyndŵr · 02/07/2022 15:21

And to be pedantic the Falklands wasn't ever declared a war. It was a "conflict".
This matters to veterans who were there.

Dead wrong
Queen Matilda- The Anarchy first English civil war
Queen Eleanor of Castile- she attacked Scotland while her husband Edward I attacked France
Queen Isabella- Used a French army to invade, overthrow her husband Edward II and ruled until her son was old enough to be made king.
Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine- started the Second Crusade
Queen Elizabeth I- started war with Spain caused by sending pirates like Drake to attack Spanish ships and colonies
Queen Anne- started war with France in the Americas over territory in Canada and US
Queen Charlotte- started invasions of Australia, New Zealand, and did 1805 war to try and take back the United States (her husband George III was ruler in name only as he was mad as a hatter so she was in charge)
and Queen Victoria started tons of wars- the British Empire expanded the most under her reign with a series of invasions and colonisations. Crimea, Boer, India/Pakistan/Bangladesh, Nigeria, etc etc.

…..and those were just the English queens.

Women DO start wars and history is full of them.
Last Russian ruler to invade Ukrainian territory was Catherine the Great…she also took the Crimea and pushed well into Turkey and Poland.

@Discovereads 👏good knowledge!

remains to be seen though as democratic nations are fairly new. So far I do know of one, Indira Ghandi, then PM of India, started the Indo-Pakistan war of 1971.

@Discovereads 👏good knowledge!

I forgot Elizabeth Is other wars in Ireland and the Netherlands too!

Discovereads · 02/07/2022 16:03

Another woman who started a war was Margaret Beaufort…not a queen, but a mother determined to make her son King of England. The War of the Roses would have been finished with the Yorks having won over the Lancastrians. Her son had been raised in exile in Brittany, France for 14yrs since it all seemed settled. But she then shipped him over with an army from France to Wales augmented it with Welsh (from her second husband) and Scottish fighters…and then while marching on London killed Richard III at Bosworth. Thus did Henry VII become king and start the Tudor dynasty.

Notanotherusernamenow · 02/07/2022 17:51

Over islands far away and was really about her strengthening her political position and winning the 83 election. Extremely patriarchal attitude to war, power, prestige, colonisation, anti-Hispanic racism and “second/third-world” nations…. All the usual “male” war mongering reasons.

I have nothing to add other than to say the knowledge some of you have is amazing! Thanks for sharing.

Johnson didn't say that Putin wouldn't have invaded Ukraine if he were a woman, he said that the specific campaign that Putin is running in Ukraine is a good example of toxic masculinity, and he (Johnson) believes that a (hypothetical) woman leader of Russia in 2022 would not have done it that way. As you likely know, the campaign has included orchestrated and sanctioned campaigns of rape and sexual violence against women and girls. if Johnson speaking up about this gets it talked about internationally - and it has - then let him keep talking.

The comment was in response to the interviewer asking him about a clip circulated online from a conversation during a lunch break at the G7 in which Johnson was joking around with Ursula von der Leyen, Emmanuel Macron, and Justin Trudeau about Putin's "showing off his pecs" to the west.

Here's the full interview; the question Johnson was responding to starts at 03.40: https://www.zdf.de/nachrichten/heute-journal/johnson-sieht-g7-gipfel-als-erfolg-102.html

nancy75 · 03/07/2022 01:59

He’s only saying that because he’s got enough exes to form a small army & he’s worried…

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/07/2022 02:05

Has there every been a war between two female world leaders? Or countries with 50% female representation. Just FYI currently that would be Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Rwanda and the United Arab Emirates. The Americas are putting us to shame.

I do think the kind of stupid, bull-headed stubborn nonsense which produced Stalingrad and similar pure ego battles, would be less prevalent if we had 50% female leadership. Women like Thatcher and Elizabeth I had to be more male than men so I don't think it's a good argument.

Booklover3 · 03/07/2022 02:29

i think given half a chance someone like priti patel would start a war…

I agree that he’s stereotyping

Ah…it was a conflict until “we won” and then curiously it became a war! Look at press from time…tells you a lot

Boris is of course correct. He knows what a woman is, and what their place is, mostly on their knees in his office....
