Started to read that interview today and then felt uneasy. I'm not sure I like him having the opportunity to justify himself.

PontipineFinderGeneral · 06/01/2008 16:51

I really don't think that he'll ever be cast in a sympathetic role again, and that'll limit his career options to villans ...

I doubt that I'd go out of my way to watch anything that he's in, but I'm not sure that I'd intentionally boycott it either.

The paranoia about paedophiles is generally out of proportion but it's understandable nonetheless. My only concern about a comeback from Chris Langham is that publicity could aid him in grooming kids.

Threadworm · 06/01/2008 16:53

I hope that he makes a successful comeback. He is an excellent and unique performer. He broke the law; he was punished. Now he should be allowed to look forwards.

Tinker · 06/01/2008 16:59

Oh, I don't know threadworm. I wish it were as simple as that; theoretically that's how it should be but, um, some crimes...don't know.

Elizabetth · 06/01/2008 17:00

The media and his fans are a lot kinder to this paedophile who stored videos of little girls being gang-raped on his computer than they are towards Britney, a troubled young woman who has just lost custody of his kids.

Then again for a while Britney was a paedophile's fantasy, maybe that has something to do with the level of hatred directed towards her.

Elizabetth · 06/01/2008 17:01

"her kids"

Threadworm · 06/01/2008 17:01

Yes poor Britney. Awful to see the headlines in the shops today.

WideWebWitch · 06/01/2008 17:35

Agree with Elizabetth on this. The lightness of his sentence is digusting and shows that we don't really care about paedophilia. Or that particular judge didn't.

alfiesbabe · 07/01/2008 09:02

Not entirely sure what I think about this one... but interesting to see various prejudices emerging. ELizabetth - interesting that you describe Britney as a 'troubled young woman'. Some people would describe the way she's treated her kids as abusive. I'm not trying to defend either Chris Langham or Britney Spears here - I'm just pointing out that it's hardly fair to portray one as an innocent troubled victim and the other as evil.

nametaken · 07/01/2008 10:05

Er?????????????

well, one is an innocent troubled victim and the other is evil.

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 07/01/2008 10:11

I thought he was backtracking in the observer interview he has gone from I've done nothing wrong to now I know what I did was wrong trying to pave the way for a comeback methinks
the observer however have a bit of a record for giving the chris langhams of this world a platform they ran a very sympathetic interview with johnathan king when he was in prison along the i'm not a peadophile really lines

andiemustlosehalfastonemore · 07/01/2008 10:12

paedophile obviously [doh]

alfiesbabe · 07/01/2008 10:24

'well, one is an innocent troubled victim and the other is evil. ' - nametaken - that is your OPINION.
As I said, I'm not defending either person, I'm simply pointing out that unless soneone knows Chris Langham and Britney Spears personally and knows the details of how they have lived their lives and what they have done (and as far as I'm aware no one on MN has said they do) then we are making judgements based on the often MISreported accounts in the media. I wouldnt presume to say that Britney Spears is 'innocent and troubled'. I don't know her.

Agree with Elizabetth

I feel that he is showing no remorse and is trying to curry sympathy by playing the victim route.

And pictures with his wife 'courageously standing by him' do not help.

Fgs, if he really wanted to get back to a normal life, for his wife and 5 kids' skae do you think he would just try and get on with things quietly, rather than creating all this publicity about himself and bring the case up for discussion again.

So he has buggered his career as an actor up - big deal. Call it a huge error of judgement or an act of wickedness, the fact is he fucked up and now has to face the consequences. he should retrain to do something else like thousand of other people do in the course of normal life. Not sit at home going woe is me, whilst the wolf is at the door. And of course getting paid nicely for all the interviews.

vitomum · 07/01/2008 11:17

i feel so sorry for the young woman he was aquitted of raping. He had actually admitted having soi called 'consensual' sex with her when she was 18, and the jury obviously believed this. However, by his own admission this was a young woman to whom he had been a role model and protective figure to since she was 13 or 14. IMO even consensual sex when she reached 18 would have been a real abuse of the trusting realtionship he had established with her. Smacks much more of 'grooming' and abuse.

HairyIrene · 07/01/2008 11:19

chris langham had expensive lawyer and justice did not appear to be done really

he will however have great difficulty in career relaunch as actor and that will probably be the justice of it i guess

would have been interesting to see if Extras would have had him? but thats finished i think...
