Can women have any faith left at all in the met police?

It’s horrendous but I guess given how many male police officers there are in the UK, statistics will say that some of them will be abusers.

Doesn’t excuse it in any way, but please don’t let it taint your view of the other officers who work day in day out to keep us all safe.

Sadly some professions will attract a certain type of person, and the same way that paedophiles will infiltrate childrens spaces, abusers will be drawn to professions which give them power over people, male and female.

I was a MET police officer in the 90's. There were thousands of us, how can you feel women may lose faith though? I think most rational people realise theres a few bad people in every role in life.....even out royal family it seems!

How can you seriously be asking why women may lose faith in the Met?

“A few bad apples” is always rolled out when these crimes are reported.

How can any woman know whether the officer approaching her is one of the good apples or one of the “few” bad apples she has read about in the news? The faith diminishes with every new report about the same department.

I'm going to report this thread because I think this is a conversation best had after the end of the trial when we can speak freely without getting MNHQ done for contempt. Not trying to silence anyone - just put it on hold for a couple of months.

And while we're on the subject of apples it's worth pointing out that the phrase "one bad apple" is usually misquoted...
The entire phrase is "One bad apple spoils the whole barrel". Because that's what happens.

I've never had any faith in the met or any other force I've encountered.

They do look the other way and make excuses for each other.

There will always be good police and bad police - they are human. There are of course internal affairs and procedures to investigate the bad and criminal.

Like any military-style organisation, there is loyalty, but there are also rules. The only thing we can hope for, and expect is that the good police who out-number the bad, have the nerve and out criminal behaviour in their own ranks.

I am not condoning the cover-ups, but do feel, in general, that the police are short-staffed (having also suffered cuts), and as a result lacking in oversight.

The shutting down/selling off of police stations and is a major slap in the face to justice in this country, and the Tories have a lot to answer for. Building confidence is going to be hard.

This kind of thing doesn't have great optics. Might be what Isthatthebestyoucando is thinking of. Certainly I recalled this article easily.

The thing is it never is light sensationalism when you want to trust someone or a profession, it does only take one bad apple for people to lose faith, I'm a professional and when one person does something so serious it makes the news all the professional bodies make statements and then changes to the profession are made to prevent the same things happening again etc and it affects us all. Police is no different. it's serious and the public are allowed to be concerned.

In my job I had to take a lot of personality tests and psychometric tests to make sure nothing arises that prevents me from being able to carry out my job as well as checking I'll be a good fit within the culture of the company not sure if this happens in the police.

Not sure if they do this in the police but it seems a number of bad eggs are slipping through the net. I had a very bad experience 16 years ago when I was assaulted by two men. The police person who was assigned to take my statement told me I shouldn't have been wearing the clothes I was in at the time and if I wasn't wearing them I'd have been able to get away by running faster (I told them I tried to run away fast enough to get away) I knew he was wrong but I didn't want to challenge a policeman.

The same people who went at me got another woman more seriously in the end. I will never trust the police again. I am scared I will ever have to dial 999 in case I have to speak with the police again, the way I was treated frightened me, the male officer I dealt with laughed at me and then after the second attack the same station tried to call me back in to help when a woman was raped by the same men. I couldn't do it. I never wanted to go back into the police station. This is how serious it can be when even one police officer causes a problem. I live constantly looking over my shoulder scared because of it too and always guilty I didn't help the other lady.

Unfortunately it will be true though that with so many people I'm sure there will always be bad ones that get through. But to act like it's ok because it's only one. Not ok.
