here
And the interview with a woman who did it. She was blamed for producing girls. I'm amazed that in this day and age its not well known that its the father's contribution that decides the sex of the baby.

that this has made the news now.

back when my mother was having one of my siblings the hospital wouldn't allow scan pictures because some of the women would come back a week later for a termination if it wasn't a boy.

it is an absolute disgrace but sadly very little could be done to prevent it other than refusal to give gender info during antenatal visits.

Hekate · 03/12/2007 18:56

I cannot believe the short-sightedness of this attitude.
So everyone has lots and lots of sons. Great. Congratulations.

These lovely, so so important boys can grow up, grow old and DIE ALONE because there aren't enough WOMEN to have their BABIES because most of them were KILLED AT BIRTH.

It's hardly rocket science, now is it?

its infuriating, asian girls do really well educationally, the are just as valuable as boys. the asian community wont run out of women, they will just ship them in from abroad.

NorthernLurkerwithastarontop · 03/12/2007 19:02

This is horrible - as the mother of three girls, wanted and treasured - I feel angry with those perpetuating this attitude in the world - especially the doctors in India, who according to the report are well aware of what is going on and choose to collude in it.

janeite · 03/12/2007 19:03

This is one of the reasons why I am so astonished that hospitals seem to routinely give out the gender of the baby now. I can think of very few good reasons why parents would need to know the sex before the birth and really hate the fact that so many people now seem to assume that they have a right to know and that hospitals seem to indulge/encourage this attitude.

bossybritches · 03/12/2007 20:12

It's not new news (IYSWIM) the hospitals in areas with larger Asian communities have routinely been witholding the sex of the child on scans to try & stop this happening.

Nonetheless still shocking & it looks like now thhe poor women are being dragged off to India where there are "discreet" cllinics for the right price.

TheDullWitch · 04/12/2007 11:52

When there is a shortage and boys are fighting for wives, maybe these countries will start to appreciate the girls they have.

EmsMum · 04/12/2007 12:05

Its terrible. I can - just about, at a stretch - understand why in a poor area the dowry system could cause girls to be a financial liability and give rise to this awful practice. But perpetuating in the UK? where girls typically do better in education than boys? Or for that matter in wealthy parts of India. Dreadful.

goingfor3christmaspuddings · 04/12/2007 12:17

It is due to the financial burdens girls put on a faily as the family have to pay a dowry. There was a programme about this fairly recently and police had found a mountain of quite large feotuses behind one of the scanning clinics. It really is horific. I'm not even sure if dowries are legal anymore but it very hard to break with culture and tradition. When I had my last 2 children the hospital policy was not to tell the sex of the baby but if someone is so dtermined they don't won't a girl they will pay to have it done privatley.
When I was on my school work experince I was present at at birth where an asian lady had a girl and she wouldn't even look at her baby she just cried and looked the other way, she only looked at her when her husband returned from calling his parents and they said it was okay that she had a girl. I was only 16 and naieve as I was shocked as I didn't expect that anyone could feel so strongly.

paulaplumpbottom · 04/12/2007 13:29

I don't know why everyone is suprised. Abortions are carried out in this country everyday for reasons that are just as absurd and selfish.

Yes Paula but they are the absurd & selfish reasons of the woman concerned in a lot of cases (still awful but it's their choice)

These are Asian women who are forced to abort their much wanted babies because they are the "wrong" sex. It is as much to do with the family tradition & honour as anything.

These poor girls are, even in this day & age,& even living in a Western society still subject to male dominance & family prejudices.
