That’s awful, that poor little girl. She must have been so scared left on her own. How could anyone just leave a toddler on their own like that?

How horrendous! Poor little darling. I don't understand at all though - it was supportive housing for young mothers, so how come nobody new? Surely the whole point of a setup like that is to ensure this sort of thing doesn't happen? How did nobody hear her crying?! How come none of the friends who she was partying with didn't question where the baby was? It's all very odd, and very distressing.

That women is a MONSTER.

If it was supported housing where was the support? Why didn't anyone notice the mother wasn't there, the poor child must have been crying a lot. Horrendous.

And the people she was out partying with should be downright ashamed of themselves too.

There must be more to this … drugs/mental health problems/learning difficulties. The child looks well looked after in those photos, clean and chubby. I can't get my head around it at all …. to just disappear on a piss up and leave her .

Re the crying: I think it's obvious a woman like this probably neglected the baby and let it cry until it learnt not to. This was unlikely to be the first time the baby was left.

What a selfish monster she is- really some people should be sterilised and never allowed children again.

Usual box ticking crap about learning lessons but this looks look multi agency failure and it’s too fucking late now isn’t it.

God I regret reading that (not your fault, OP, very clearly labelled but that story will stay with me for a long time). I'm sure there's more to the story - mental health/drugs or similar (otherwise it would surely be murder?) - but that poor, poor little girl.

That poor baby, this is so upsetting.
I imagine there is some background stuff going on here, her dad says his daughter was missing from age 14, the baby was on the at risk register and they were in supported housing. Where was the support? Why didn’t they have a social worker? It’s not good enough.

None of this detracts from a little child dying in horrific circumstances.

I doubt an 18 year old would anticipate that a child would die in 6 days. She probably thought she'd come back home and give the baby a decent meal and all would be well. It's not an excuse, but I do think she probably thought all would be well.

She was 18 not 8. Tbh even my 8 year old would know how harmful it would be to leave anyone, let alone a baby without food or water for days on end.

Um... really? I’m pretty sure most 18 yr olds could work that out tbh. My DS was 6 months old on my 18th, I still realised things like that...

It does read a bit like she somehow expected it not to be an issue, that the baby would be fine - but it absolutely can’t be just because she’s 18, there must be something else going on if that’s the case.

She was 18, not 8. Any 18 yr old should know fine well that a child needs feeding more than once a week!

If an 18 year old doesn't know that people need food and water to live then I would assume they have severe learning disabilities.

I'm not saying that it was right or excusable. I'm just saying that I get the impression that she didn't anticipate her child would die. It's an awful situation. The child was failed, but I'm sure she wasn't just failed by her mother.

There's definitely more to this story. It sounds like the mother may have been a victim of abuse herself and the poor child is a product of that.

I find it really disturbing and thinking about it just makes my heart ache how any person let alone a mother can do this to their baby. I also don't understand what sort of society we live in. Has no neighbour heard this baby cry for days which would be unusual for those that are used to the usual sounds and routines. I'm sure this baby probably cried a lot day and night as I have a 2 yo myself. I hear my neighbours baby cry at certain times especially in the night but I also hear the parents getting up and trying to calm the baby but if I didn't hear that and especially for days, I would ring somewhere. My aunt had that with her neighbours before when the baby was screaming and screaming for hours in the night and it was pitch black so she called the police (this was like 20 years ago) and the police turned up and found the parents passed out from alcohol where they had friends around.

If alcohol and drugs were involved, she likely had to concept of time and maybe Even forgot. No excuse for it though.

Poor kid must have been terrified. Its horrible to think a child could be left alone for so long without anyone realising.

At 18 I was a nanny and caring for other people’s children. I believe most neurotypical adults would understand that a child of one year, 8 months would not be able to get themselves food or water if left alone for 6 days, let alone the capacity for injury if left.

I honestly don't understand why she was charged with manslaughter and not murder. I'm sorry any bloody 18 year old knows if you leave a child for 6 DAYS with no food and water they will die. I absolutely refuse to believe she thought she'd get home and the child would be fine.

Nonsense, she'd raised that child for 20 months. She knew.

Very sad. But if the mum and baby were living in a unit for young mums and their babies, how in the world was the little one not accounted for once in six days? That's crazy.
