Ireland - No covid deaths and just one hospital admission today

I just saw that Ireland had no covid deaths today and had just one hospital admission. Why is Ireland so much different to here?

Does anyone know why the number of deaths has been so much higher here in the UK than in other countries?

I just checked and it's not even a public holiday in Ireland.
(This was DP's suggestion.)

The situation here in Britain and the numbers of deaths is really depressing.

That's fantastic. Really pleased to hear that.

I think the virus was later to hit, their lockdown was fairly swift, smaller population and they arent a 'through' hub as london is.
Oh and they dont have twats like Cummings spreading it around.

AnnieJ1985 · 25/05/2020 20:57

Our population is much smaller than UK, so our numbers seem tiny in comparison, but we have had a clear set of regulations since 13th March and the vast majority of people have followed them. Our (acting) government has done a good job overall, not without fault in some areas, and there has been a strong buy in from the public. We have basically been paid to stay safe at home.

PegasusReturns · 25/05/2020 20:58

They locked down earlier and more rigorously.

Plus dublin is not the international air transport hub that LHR is.

Surely, this is obvious?

We have twats like Johnson and Cummings in charge.

I am very proud of our little nation

Our government and people played a blinder.

No bull, direct, clear, consise information

Strong lockdown

Crazycrazylady · 25/05/2020 21:01

We acted fairly early and people really bought into the whole premise of staying home , however I've noticed it creaking in recent days. Hoping it doesn't set us back now.

PickleKing · 25/05/2020 21:01

Our government locked down early, and fully, and the public abided by the strict rules. I have to admit I've been shocked by the lax attitude of the British authorities throughout this whole thing. Each to their own, I suppose, but when your own Prime Minister misses 5 COBRA meetings and then contracts the virus himself, it looks a bit silly.

MadeForThis · 25/05/2020 21:02

Very proud.

Lockdown was stricter. Can't travel far from your house except for key workers.

nowaitaminute · 25/05/2020 21:02

Our shops and distancing pathways, Perspex screens, hand sanitizer at the doors etc etc and the U.K. had not even locked down yet...that could be a contributing factor!?

AnnieJ1985 · 25/05/2020 21:03

Me too @elizabthdraper
Today is a good day.

I like our new "Hold Firm" message, we can hopefully weather the next few weeks

HannahStern · 25/05/2020 21:08

Johnson and Cummings' delay in reacting to the virus has resulted in 55,000 excess deaths in the UK.

isadoradancing123 · 25/05/2020 21:10

Smaller population and lockdown was entered early and strictly, while Boris was still singing happy birthday whilst washing his hands

Sittingontheveranda · 25/05/2020 21:12

The virus was not later to hit than ithe UK. In fact many cited Cheltenham goers as a huge contributory factor to the number of cases Ireland had early on.

There was/is strict lockdown. There is strong leadership. There is respect for the older members of society. The attitudes of the population are very different with the exception of a few (mainly teenagers). There is a big difference between attitudes in general between the UK and Ireland and never has it been so highlighted since March.

AngelaScandal · 25/05/2020 21:15

Lockdown plus contact tracing since March.

VodselForDinner · 25/05/2020 21:28

Lockdown
Compliance
Tracing
Testing
Strong leadership
Clear guidelines
Strong economic support package for individuals and businesses
Security of further funding through EU

YoungsterIwish · 25/05/2020 23:29

Early lockdown and way stricter- all non-essential workplaces closed (WFH only), all schools and childcare still closed.
Strong clear leadership from CMO + government.
Very clear and strict guidelines, e.g. we still can't go more than 5km for exercise.
Financial support including for self employed.
Testing capacity - struggled at the start but got there. Germany helped out until capacity increased.
Increased healthcare capacity- took over private hospitals, recruitment etc. Also delays to lots of other procedures (waiting lists will be huge Sad )
HSA (Health and Safety Authority), HSE, Gardai, Councils etc all working together to enforce and enable restrictions.

There's been mistakes too (Cheltenham clusters, Italian rugby fans, nursing homes are the obvious ones) but so glad to see zero deaths today.

Windmillwhirl · 29/05/2020 06:51

Deaths occurring again. 9 again yesterday I think.
