The Grand Old Duke of York was yesterday accused of wasting valuable resources when marching 10,000 men up to the top of the hill, then marching them down again.

A spokesman for York district council said, "When they were up they were up, and when they were down they were down, and when they were only halfway up, they were neither up nor down."

The Duke explained that marching up and down the hill was a training exercise, giving troops valuable insight into being up, down, and neither up nor down.
A soldier, who asked to remain nameless, said, "It's political correctness gone mad."

Unnamed sources have claimed that 10,000 more men are set to walk up and down the hill next week. This was not confirmed by the Grand Old Duke, or his office.

I take great exception to the ageism and sexism shown on this thread.

I would prefer the term Venerable Duke of York. Or Grand Duke of York.

Also, I think reports have incorrectly excluded the women who participated in the march. Many of them had interesting childcare issues that they had to resolve in order to participate in the march.

Military sources have commented that this troop 'surge' has led to a significant reduction in the number of incidents at the top of the hill, and therefore that the time has come for marching them down again -- without in any sense reducing the commitment to a flourishing future for those at the top of the hill.
