Coronavirus in China

I am concerned that the UK Government is being too slow about setting up some kind of testing at airports.
Should we be testing passengers for raised temperatures?
Surely this could be done for incoming flights from China and affected countries?

Very interesting to read all your comments.
I am still concerned about how this will unfold. The Chinese Govt is building a prefab hospital in Wuhan. Should be built by 3rd Feb (they say).
Can you imagine that happening in London?

Interestingly our NHS doesn’t sometimes use prefabricated buildings put up quickly. A trust in Surrey installed prefabricated operating theatres that were opened onsite within a fortnight when their air filtration systems failed.
Many trusts used inflatable or mobile accommodation to extend their emergency departments when winter pressures were at their worst.
There are already fairly firm plans in place for additional emergency accommodation for just such eventualities but staffing is the problem.

I'm sorry ( and I hope I'm wrong) but I think the Chinese government are not telling the world the true number of deaths it's being reported it's 41 I think that is utter rubbish and I would imagine the real number in China alone is probably a few thousand. There are videos on instagram being smuggled out showing people dead on floors in a hospital it's horrific. I do hope I'm wrong but I don't think so Shock

That is my gut feeling too.

DS showed me the video this morning. It looks worse than the authorities are acknowledging.

It seems that China is still allowing its citizens to eat meat from wild animals, even after the SARS outbreak in 2002.

I am sorry for those who have already lost their lives in the present outbreak of Coronavirus. However, the Chinese Government should be feeling very ashamed and embarrassed. Maybe covering up the scale of the whole debacle is their way of dealing with it.

Really hard to know if the videos are really showing what people claim or not. I do think it's likely worse than China are acknowledging.

But still no reason to panic in my opinion especially in the UK. Wash your hands more than you think you need to, sterilise your phone with alcohol wipes a few times a day, cover your mouth when you cough: imo these are basic hygiene practices everyone should be following every day anyway, but a lot of people, both in China and elsewhere, don't.

WHO issued a situation report yesterday that is already very much out of date. 3 more confirmed cases in the States and 80 reported deaths overall.

A very good constantly updating interactive map of coronavirus cases.

ByAppointmentTo · 31/01/2020 09:38

Two confirmed cases in the U.K. now.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 31/01/2020 10:00

And declared a global emergency by WHO. Yup, just a regular 'ole virus Confused
It's getting fucking scary now. Let's see how those repatriated brits who are returning home today do today after the 14 day quarantine, poor buggers must be scared. Fingers crossed for them HmmThanks

AndThenThereWereSeven · 31/01/2020 10:02

At least we have the support of the rest of Europe ... Oh no, wait ...

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 31/01/2020 10:02

Disclaimer - I have watched waaaay too many virus apocalyptic films over the years so that doesn't help my view. That withstanding, it's still extremely worrying.

I believe stroking a unicorn horn wards off all sorts of evils so I'm just keeping my eye out for one of the many I'm sure I'll start to see ...

Imserious · 31/01/2020 10:45

It is worrying! The 2011 film "contagion" was very scary I know it's only a film but ........ I'm still.not convinced that China have been honest about amount of deaths Hmm in their country. I still hope I'm over reacting but this has been going on for weeks now.

Been confirmed that the UK cases are in Newcastle. My hometown. Marvellous

MissPoldark · 31/01/2020 11:03

Been confirmed that the UK cases are in Newcastle
They are being TREATED in Newcastle as there is one of the country’s few infectious diseases units at the RVI.
We still don’t yet know where the patients are from.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 31/01/2020 11:07

Are they actually from Newcastle though? The BBC report just says taken to a specialist hospital in Newcastle.

Imserious · 04/02/2020 13:18

So Foreign Office have urged ALL UK citizens to leave China. How has this taken so long!!!!
